I'm not usually a fan of medlys, especially of things like Billboard hits. There is SOOO much good music out there beyond what got played ad nauseam on commercial radio. Still, it's kind of a nostalgic trip to take, once in a blue moon.

Bobby Gentry's voice wow and her looks

40s Junction is a regular channel on my SiriusXM radio. I just reactivated it, since every time you cancel, they send you offers of $5.00 a month for 12 months.

1941 HITS ARCHIVE: Just A Little Bit South Of North Carolina - Gene Krupa (Anita O’Day, vocal)

I was watching Adventures Made from Scratch on YT, when I was reminded (sadly) of this song. It turned into an ear worm, so you're welcome.

Sammy Johns, "Chevy Van" (1975).

I've loved this song probably since I first heard it. It was 1973, I was in boot camp in San Diego. On Sundays, we'd get to listen to the radio for a couple of hours or so (maybe 4), depending on how well we'd done that week. KRTH (K-Earth 101) in Los Angeles came in really well, since we were right there on the water. Plus, KRTH's antenna was located on Mt. Wilson in Los Angeles, so it could easily cover most of Southern California.

Our DI was an old salt, on his last tour, so a lot more relaxed than most others. He'd discovered KRTH and its Top 40 format when he'd come back from Vietnam. The year I went to boot camp, they had changed formats to "oldies," which, according to Wiki, was 1953 to 1963, but they also had programming where they'd play more current hits as well. Maybe it was a transition from Top 40 to Golden Oldies.

He was a tough old bird, but at the same time, pretty cool. He'd discovered somehow that some radio time could be as, if not more, motivating that just about anything. At least a couple of blanket parties where held when somebody f*cked up and got our radio privileges revoked.

Dobie Gray, "Drift Away" (1973) - the song is actually older than that, but that's when his version came out.

Imagine a song so long (especially in those days) that it took up both sides of a 12", 78rpm record.

Benny Goodman "Sing, Sing, Sing." I don't know the date for this one, but it was released in 1936. There's a longer, live version, but I haven't found it yet.

This one is 12 minutes, live from Carnegie Hall.

Elizabeth Cook "Sometimes it takes Balls to be a Woman" (2007) Elizabeth Cook; Melinda Schneider; from Cook's 4th album, aptly entitled "Balls," which featured production efforts by Nanci Griffith and Rodney Crowell.

The song was banned at the Grand Ole Opry, despite Cook's having been a member for 7 years at the time.

The incomparable Miss Emmylou Harris. A song you don't hear all that often (if ever): "Luxury Liner (Forty Tons of Steel)" (2008)." Written by the late, great Gram Parsons.

I always type out the name of the band, the song, and other relevant information if I can. It's annoying to go back through the posts (which I haven't done in a while) only to find a blank spot where the video used to be, because it got taken down on YT.

The Graystones' cover of the much overplayed Eagles' song "I Can't Tell You Why."
