holiday parties in school?

My youngest girl is in 2nd grade at the local public elementary school. Until this year they always had classroom holiday parties. Now suddenly they don't.

They didn't do class parties for Xmas or Halloween and now I hear there will be no Valentines Day party for them either? Just 15 minutes at the end of the day to exchange cards.

When I was a kid we really looked forward to these party days. Our moms brought in goodies and we had a great time. They were special days.

I feel like she's missing out.

Too many whiners complaining about it being different from their religion.

You can thank all the wonderful people that don't want their children celebrating halloween or christmas for "religious" reasons.....

Go Braves!
My son (pre-k) has had a Halloween party, "Holiday" party and they are planning a V'Day party. Maybe it's the leadership at the school?

I think it is school based, my kiddo has a halloween party every year, and they al lget to dress up, and she has a holiday (christmas) party, and are going to have a v-day party after their field trip to the dump.
But my friends daughter, same grade, same county, diff. school, has never had ANY of that......

I'm going to bust right in to my daughters class Tuesday afternoon and bring cupcakes, punch and blow pops for all! I'll totally disrupt the class and send them home to their parents with sugar highs.

Happy Valentines Day Ms.Suchandsuch! :yay:

I am sooo retarded. I thought you were saying the teachers real name and I was reading it not as Ms. Suchandsuch! but as Ms. Suchanduchi (pronounced "Sooch-an-duchi). :killingme :killingme :killingme

Well, I bought Valentines cards for both their classes already and they are filled out (due to the anticipation). They better have something.

I think that's very sad that our children are deprived of celebrating stuff that the mainstream of our society thinks is Somebody Else's Belief. Hey, folks, suppose we all refuse to go to work every Thursday just because the day is named for Thor, a God that most of us probably don't believe in any more?

Hey, folks, I'm more than happy to have our schools treat our children to all kinds of holidays, no matter who they're in honor of! It teaches them to honor ancient heroes of all kinds, not to mention it gives them a break that'll rejuvenate them towards further learning when they get back down to serious learning.

They should be thanked with a swift kick in the rump right on back to where they came from.

This is a God fearing country, built on the morals and laws given to man from God. (like it or not, they really are so dont blow my rant)

If the pansies dont like it, they can just stay home for the day while the little pure christian children party till they puke.

Its not like little heathen johnny is going to attend a halloween party at school and suddenly become the Pope.

I have two smaller children in school in one of the local schools and they are both doing a V-day party. I know when they did Halloween it was called a Harvest party and when they did Christmas it was a Holiday party...but they still did them:) It is to bad that other schools dont have the kids doing it...

We have "Fall Festival" and "Winter Festival", but Valentine's Day is still that (so far), but we're only allowed 30 minutes. It's not only political correctness, we are being told not to take away from "instructional" time. Of course it's ok to take away from "instructional" time for test, test, test!, but God forbid kids actually get to enjoy school and do anything fun to motivate them to want to come to school and learn! :smack:

In my opinion the widespread phasing out of school events (not just holiday parties) has to do with the onset of the era of tighter school budgets and "bottom-line" style education--that is, the now-prevalent belief that school is a place you go to learn core subjects and take standardized tests* (which are in place to test the schools, not the students) and nothing else.

I went to Leonardtown High School from 1995-1999. As a freshman, we had two pep rallies and three dances (if I remember correctly). By my senior year, we were down to zero pep rallies and one dance, not counting prom. Zero pep rallies, as in not even for homecoming. Art, music, and events like holiday parties and pep rallies are all starting to inch over into the "nonessential" column a little more every year. Sporting events like football and track won't be going anywhere, of course, since ticket sales make money for the schools.

Edit: *which Snuzzy pointed out as well while I was typing up this post.

Even if it is for tighter budget alot of parents bring stuff in... so that wouldnt really come into play. I know i am room mom for one child and help out in the other childs room and i always bring stuff for snacks and ask other parents to help out as well...
