What's wrong with eating horses or dogs or cats?

From today's Post:

The lovely Bo Derek, who's 47 but will always be "10" in certain imaginations, came to Congress yesterday to back legislation banning the slaughter of American horses -- some 50,000 a year -- to feed gourmet appetites in Europe and Asia...Derek's appeal: "As a horse owner, I was shocked. We don't use horses any longer for pet food, so why are we sending them over to other countries?"

This may sound weird, but if someone wants to eat meat from a horse or a dog or a cat, why is that considered wrong?

i personally would not eat it, but have been told that horse meat sashimi (sp?) in japan is great.

people have to respect other cultures and not push their own onto others.

Agreed. Our country has been pushing the South Koreans not to eat dogs.

It's a society thing. Here it's considered taboo to eat a dog or a cat, and in India they feel just as strongly - or much more so - about eating cows.

And since India isn't pushing their views on us, we shouldn't push our views down the throats of other countries.

In fact, If I bought my neighbor's dog, and then cut it into quarters, and barbecue and eat the annoying bstard, I should be able to do so.

Tastes like chicken!

We have weird views on animals in this country. We like to get all sentimental about them and pretend they're human. Comes from having too much - food, leisure time, money, etc.

Christy and several others own pet pigs, yet bacon and ham doesn't "shock" them. Same thing, imo.

I remember watching "Faces of Death," and they had a monkey in a vice grip in the center of the table and whacked him a few times and ate his brain. It was the same way we crack crabs or something. Maybe somebody else who has seen it can remember where that was.

:twitch:

Was the monkey alive?

At least we have the decency to kill crabs (by throwing them in superheated steam) before we eat them.

According to whom? Until the last 15 years or so it was difficult to find anyone who even cared what happened to the random dog or cat, let alone if someone was to eat it. Of course, noone wanted their own pet hurt, but beyond that, all this sudden concern over the lives of every last dog and cat is a new thing.

All this recent concern is just pseudo pc crap though. Someone can be sent to jail for years for mistreating a few dogs and what happens to those dogs. A couple might get adopted and the rest are killed and their corpses burned or landfilled (or dumped on the backside of your property). Death is considered more humane then perceived suffering or the burden of paying for unwanted animals. Maybe we should adopt this philosophy with humans as well. Isn't that what humane really means? Treating them as we treat humans (not that we always treat humans especially well either)?

Personally, I've never been able to separate my concern over cats and dogs from that of the other multiple thousands of animals we slaughter every year. It always seemed strange to me that someone could get all hyped up over a dog being kicked, but slitting the throat of a cow is just a prelude to a good meal at outback. As far as I'm concerned, one dumb animal is no better then the next.

Oh he was alive, it was horrible. I find it hard to believe I'm the only one who has ever watched "Faces of Death." I know somebody else had to see it.

According to everyone I've ever talked to about this, as they get horrorfied looks on their faces at the concept of eating a dog.

Of course, the past 15 years is about all I can remember. So I don't know whether it was taboo before then or not. And societal mores concerning dogs and cats are not typically included in historical literature.

It's like anything - if you actually watch it, you'd be horrified. We've seen dogs get kicked or heard about someone grilling their kitten, but the only cows most of us see are peacefully grazing in a pasture or sitting on our plates in the form of a steak or hamburger. We don't see the in-between stage.

I've seen it, but never watched the whole thing. Mostly what I remember were vague distant images of stupid stunts going awry, a firing squad execution or two, and there was this one thing about leeches that seem to tickle my memory.

Oh - and that one part with Owen What-sis-name blowing his brains out during a press conference.

Don't remember anything about a monkey though.

 Well, I didn't know how else to describe it. It was horrible and that poor monkey screamed and screamed.

Love frogs legs. A friend brought a bunch up from Florida and they were great. But I won't say they taste like chicken. But they do..
