People who try to give me lectures about the bible and why I'm going to hell offend me.

92% of Americans dont come preaching the word of Jesus to my face. I dont mind religion. I dont mind people practicing religion no matter what religion it is. But I do hate when out government enacts law because its the religiously right thing to do *gaymarriage* or when people try to show me that stupid ####ing abortion video for 990th time.

Ive read the bible, and I guarantee Im more ethical under their religious standards than they are.

Religion is what it is, a THEORY. You have your theories and I have mine. My theory says your theory sucks.

AND MY theory says YOUR theory sucks...

A LOT of bad Christians in this world, today and throughout history, and a LOT of good people doing good work that aren't. You can't equate good and evil to God fearing or Godless, nobody has a corner on either market.

There is nothing inherently wrong with religion. The problem lies with some of the people who practice it.

I take issue with those who try to mix religion with politics. Seldom has anything good come of that.

People generally know what is good and what is bad. Most don't need a reason to be good, it's just who they are. The same could said for bad.

If you feel church and salvation is the ONLY reason to be good, are you really a 'good person', or are you being good solely for selfish reasons?

No, not at all. Just the opposite, really. I'm suggesting that what an atheist considers "good" could be, literally, ANYTHING, for there is not standard by which to go.

I agree. MOST of what people consider "good" and "bad" are from their culture, their surroundings, their teachings. MOST of what atheists in the US learn is the Christian standard, as that is the basic standard of our culture. Therefore, most American atheists consider "good" what a Christian would, and "bad" what a Christian would. While they may not believe in the religion, their concept of "good and bad" comes from the Christian standards from their surroundings.

What I'm saying is that the atheists have a standard, and for most it's unknowingly the Bible, or at least the Judeo-Christian belief system that surrounds them.

I wasn't suggesting this, either. As you and I have discussed before many times, I believe that a "good" person does things because they know they're right (and doesn't do things because they know those things are wrong) - NOT because of the carrot-stick concepts of Heaven and Hell.

Him and I have a had a long discussion and He told me to stay away from man's heathenist churches that bastardize His name and his word. He told me to pray in private, to go to a closet, not a church, to pray to Him.

He also told me He doesn't need my money, doesn't need temples built in His glory.. Doesn't need multi-million dollar pieces of art, and doesn't need good work done in His name.. He said JUST DO IT!!

Yep... that's what He tells a lot of us....

Why is it people keep saying negative things about religion and then wonder why people question the church?

Fact is the only thing wrong with religion is it's built by people.....

There's a lot wrong with religion... Faith is what we need... that's all... Faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior...

Have you ever noticed how high the noses are in some of the pews?

One deacon of a church told us that most of the people using those envelopes, use it to cover the fact they only gave a dollar... fancy that!

Oh and the head deacon of the same church said they were encouraged to tell the congregation that people were giving the tithe and a love offering on top of it.... so the congregation would give more to keep up with the Jones....

Sure. Although there are multiple definitions. To a Christian, a cult is any religion that doesn't hold to Christ's divinity.
I disagree. Several come to mind off the top of my head. Everything from the Assyrian and Babylonian conquests of the Middle East, or Alexander the Great, or Darius the Mede's conquests, and more recently WWI and WWII.

In sheer numbers of people killed (not necessarily from the result of combat) Stalin and Chairman Mao's purges come to mind (conservative estimates say at least 15-20 million killed by starvation and execution etc.)
While there is debate on who some of the authors are, there is also good historical evidence for the authors as accepted in conservative circles. Especially for the New Testament. Read some of FF Bruce's work.
Please cite some examples so we can discuss.
Bottom line is you don't want to believe what Christianity says. You want to have it your way and nothing anybody says is gonna convince you.
