When Stores Close Due To Rising Crime, Urban Blight Is Back — And It Will Get Worse

You know, "Melanie" one hit wonder, did a song about a roller skate key...

I gotta brand new roller skate
You gotta brand new key
I think a we should get together
and try them out you see

I'm a sexist pig, but did she mean sexual intercourse maybe??

To the topic - what seriously is the rationale believing that fewer cops will NOT result in more crime?

Do people think that - left alone - crime will go away, and the presence of cops somehow PROMOTES crime?
Now that California has more or less made shoplifting legal if it's under a given threshold ( I realize it's still a crime, just highly unlikely to EVER be prosecuted - making it effectively legal) - we've seen scenes of stores looted in broad daylight.

If you make it so that all crime is never punished - do they think that people will not DO it?

You'll have to check with Kwillia, she's the resident guru on Melanie's career.

Simple minded fools think they can eliminate crime the easy way - make everything legal. There ya go, no more crime. But that means we can react to them without fear of legal action too, because, well, nothing is illegal.

I've always said that when there's no consequences for bad behavior, there's no reason for it to change.
If you have a highway where people speed, for example, and no one ever gets a ticket - people will speed.
If you have a spot on 235 South through Mechanicsville where the speed limit is 45 and they DO TICKET - people will slow down.

So I am going to add to my oft mentioned remark - refusing to punish people for bad behavior is PERMISSION.
Because there's no difference whatsoever between something that is not a crime, and something that IS but one is NEVER caught, arrested, punished or in any way fined or even inconvenienced. If you call something a crime and refuse to ever punish it - it's not a crime.

Thanks for bringing back the 70s, Biden. Crime, inflation, anti-Americanism, political corruption, civil unrest, high gas prices, bad music.....

Nobody looks that far into their actions - or paradoxically, they think it's not related.
Ya think you can spend money all day long - and not drive the nation into further debt - or print money and not cause inflation? Or get rid of cops and not increase crime? Or shut down gas and oil and not drive up gas prices? Or refuse to even INVESTIGATE political corruption (and instead set up kangaroo courts and partisan commissions) and NOT think that it will get worse?

If you don't change the oil in your car - you'll burn out the engine. If you drive it and don't add gas, you'll run out. If you drive on bald tires, you'll get a blow out. It's not harsh - it's just the way it is.

I do not understand the mind that dissociates the promises the socialists make - from the consequences that come later.

That makes no sense. How would you use an actual key with an actual roller-skate.
Dam, you're young! Roller skates use to be adjustable and were attached to your shoes; the key was used to lock/unlock the adjustment mechanism. Now GET OFF MY LAWN!

I had a pair just like that. Interestingly, they became a skateboard one day. Magic.
Funny, a lot of them did. Back then skateboards were tiny by today's standards. If you hit someone with one, it generally ended up bad for you.

Fair bet i'm a bit older than you, but I never had a pair of these. I had a couple pair of skates, but they more or less looked like what you would find in any roller rink today. I remember seeing these, especially in media (tv/movies), but never knew about the key. Guess that's my new thing for the day.

A lot of people are not able, or not willing, to think even a day ahead, or consider even the most immediate consequences of their actions. (See all the people collecting unemployment benefits right now instead of taking less money and building their careers). And most people are selfish jerks without an ounce of introspection.

If some never-do-well is told that they are poor not because of laziness, but because Somebody Else is taking the fruits of their labor or keeping them down, and they can have all of that just by “taking and dividing” the Fat Cats’ riches, they will do it. They have nothing to lose, and there’s a chance to get a shiny thing for low effort (rob and loot).
Add in a morally justifying slogan like “all private property is theft” and “rob the robbers” (both historical slogans of revolution), and you got it.
