Where can I buy high quality furniture?

My wife and I are relocating to St. Mary's County soon and have no idea where to find a high quality furniture store. We like hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, and some of the softer woods like some pines, so long as they are solid wood and fit our room design. We don't like anything from those lower quality stores like the room store, or gavigins. We don't mind medium/medium-high quality furniture from stores like Gardiners.

So what is there in St. Mary's county?

Thanks!

I don't recognize any of the stores you mentioned, so I guess I'm not much help....

But, if you have something in mind, and don't mind waiting for custom work, I suggest you check out some of our local furniture makers. There are quite a few Mennonite cabinet/furniture makers in the Loveville/Oakville area. They normally use all hardwoods, pay attention to detail, and they are craftsman, not just assemblers.

And welcome to somd!

When we first moved to the County, we took a weekend trip to High Point, NC and picked out everything we needed and had it shipped up. You can get any brand you want and a huge variety -- just pick a store that is recommended. Stay away from Furnitureland South - terrible on customer svc... It did save us a tremendous amt of money plus gave us lots of choices. It was a nice weekend too --- there is a great place to stay with a great restaurant. You don't get the tax break that you used to on buying out of state (MD is on to us)....but if you find a place with everything you need, it can save you even more -- high end too.

Another place that is recommended for unique things - Farmville, VA.

Thanks! And thanks for the advice. We had our dining room set hand crafted by a furniture maker in Baltimore, they were great! They even put our family crest on the the underskirt of the table at the head. Its awesome work and sort of spoiled us against lesser quality workmanship.

Thats a great idea. I don't mind spending money on good stuff, but I think I am a bigger fan of saving money on good stuff ;)

There are some really nice furniture store in areas near St Marys.

Bowie has Haverty's Which is a nice store. Annapolis has Ethan Allen. I am sure D.C. has tons of stuff.. As far as St Marys Goes I have no clue...

Did the High Point NC. furniture thing several years ago, saved lots. Spent a day going around to different stores, ended up going to Rose's Furniture (and not the crappy dept store either). They delivered it up here may have been free or certainly wasnt much.
I recently checked a few stores over the internet, think I just yahoo ' High Point NC', then went to furniture stores. :yay:

I ended up at Barnes in White Plains (right outside of Waldorf on 301). It's an hours drive from Lexington Park driving the speed limit. They were the only store after going into every furniture store here and in Waldorf before I found solid wood furniture in a shaker style. Nice name brands. "Smith Brothers" for couches, and "Hooker" for the entertainment center and assorted tables. Free shipping. Had the stuff 6 years and it still looks brand new, and that's with rowdy kids.

:yeahthat:
Green Front Furniture in Farmville, VA. It's a 3-hour drive but worth it. They are nationally famous. Raley's in Waldorf has name-brand (not "cheap") furniture and so does CL Barnes in White Plains.

I have two suggestions

Gallihans in Fredericksburg VA - Amazing Showcase , and they deliver in our area for very reasonable. We special ordered what we wanted and it came within 8 weeks.

Also - HAVERTY's in Crofton. Nice selection.

Thompson's in Hollywood and Raley's in Lex Park (or Waldorf) are both very competitive and a pleasure to do business with. Both are established local businesses who appreciate their customers.

I ordered some Broyhill dining room furniture from Raley's last year about 10 days before Thanksgiving and they delivered everything the day before Turkey Day! That was awesome, and I got a good deal on everything!

Buy at Thompson's Furniture

Thompson's Furniture is located in Hollywood, MD. Eddie and Billy Thompson, Brothers and the owners, carry a wide variety of brands from economy to upscale. I have been buying furniture there, as has my family, for 40 years. They give a good deal for good furniture. In fact, I just bought a new cherry dining room set from them, seats 10 and will be ordering new living room furniture next week.

Check them out. They are located on Old Route 235 in Holywood / Sandy Bottom.
