Where should I volunteer?

I'm looking for a volunteering opportunity in St. Mary's, southern Calvert, and surrounding areas. Would like to give 1-3 nights a week after work; manual labor, cleaning, helping people, social work, I'll do almost anything (legal!) as long as it helps someone who needs it.

Tell me if you know of any particular places that need help!

(I'm already going to ask at local churches, SMILE in Lusby, etc, I was hoping I might get a direct contact through here)

Try a local nursing home.

Check with some of the local churches that run soup kitchens and othe out reaches services. They always can use a hand.
Christmas in April is coming up and whiel that's just one day, a number of folk I know carry on some sort of ongoing assitance with families they have met.
So if you are handy with home repairs.

What about sickly people that need help?

Have you thought about helping out families that are destitute because one of the family members is dying, chronically ill and cannot do anything at all and needs help. Most people like this, their spouses lose or have to quit their jobs because Health Insurance does not pay for a nurse, or even a person to help around the house, run errands, etc.. My husband was terminated while taking leave under FMLA. He lost his career, our health insurance, we do not qualify for disability, unemployement,(they say he quit which is not true), and we are losing everything we own due to me being ill. I have such guilt about what the illnesses I have has done to my family, that every morning when I awake, I wish that I had not. I have guilt because my husband is run into the ground trying to shop, do errand, clean house, homework, cook, everything that a wife would pitch in to do, and he is exhausted. We also have a young boy that has high functioning Aspergers who needs a lot of our attention when he gets home. That alone could wear a parent out but I was wondering if you would get pleasure from helping a mother that has tremendous guilt about the burden that she has to witness her husband take on, look her children in the eyes and know what they see is a dying mommy, etc..
I will take any help we can get. We have to move in about 6 to 8 months and we need to start packing also. My husband cannot keep up with the daily chores, errands, and such not to mention start packing.
Thank You!

If there is anyone else that has time to volunteer, to run errands, grocery shop, light cleaning, get ready for a yard sale, (we have to move due to foreclosure), etc.... I would appreciate a reply. We have no income and cannot pay anyone to help but I know there are retired healthy people that are bored @ home and want to do something. If someone would be willing to help even for a couple of hours a week, it would be greatly appreciated. You may even obtain free items as we used to be upper middle class citizens, both with careeers and made approximately $300,000 and up. We have been given gifts from people that are things like "gifts that a person gives to someone who already has everything", we need to get rid of all that we can before we have to be out of our home. We don't even know where we can go but we will worry about that later. If there is someone who would like to help, run errands, be a companion, or do whatever they feel please leave a message.
God Bless!

Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad - Company 39 All the local rescue squads in St Marys are 100% volunteer, and provide all necessary training at no cost to you. There is a retirement program and a tax credit you are eligible for after 3 years(LOSAP). Lexington Park is the station I belong to, but all of them operate the same way in this regard. Most if not all will require a minimum number of hours per month, but usually a relatively low number. Lexington Park is 30 hours per month for active member or 10 hours per month for reserve member. Something to consider if you really want to volunteer to help people.
