As you drive around, write the names down of all the company's in our area and when you get home hit up their company web sites and look at their jobs/careers sections. You can even open accounts with them to drop your resume in or apply for specific openings within your skill set!

Company examples:
Ratheron
Mantec
BEA
SAIC
Booz Allen
RMC
Omnitec
J F Taylor
etc

Find someone with roots in the county, someone who can trace their lineage to the Ark & Dove (did I spell that right).
Marry them.
Now you have connections which works much better then cold calls.

LOL! SO TRUE! I know someone who worked for a contractor, got hired by her Mom, promoted by her uncle and then hired by the government (through her aunt) - who bought out her contract, she didn't have the appropriate education, so they re-wrote the job description - and she was given a supervisory position over someone with 10+ more experience, to avoid the complications, they relocated her to a new office so she could work for her Mom - who retired, but was now hired by a contractor...vicious cycle...but she makes some serious $$$$$ now. All that within 5 years. Amazing what a last name can do.

Only if someone cares to report / investigate it. But while I know nepotism exists, I was talking about a completely legal and ethical process. You make contacts over the years, personal and professinal. Use them. If a former co-worker is looking for a job and my firm has an opening, If I know the person is good I have no problem pushing the resume. Often directly to the hiring manager and short cutting HRO. What's in it for me? A solid co-worker, someone I know I can depend on.

Oh I know it exists, 80% of ALL job hiring's is through networking! It's all the other things you mentioned that were well into the gray area for me!
