I'm not Jewish, and I don't have a copy of the Websterstein desk dictionary handy so I cant say with any authority.
however, I always considered a schmuck as the same as a jerk, one that knows he is ignorant, and goes out of his way to be so.
I think of a putz as someone that might be feeble minded and sort of goofy and aloof, but, by no reason of personal choice.

Putz or schmuck?
My step mom is Jewish and she, as an authority on Jewish insults and cuss words, says they are both bad. I said "How bad, worse than dick or #######?"
And she said "yes!"
I am not so sure. Schmuck is, basically the same as calling someone an a hole and putz seems to be pretty much the same as calling someone a dick. So, the only reasonable thing is to put it to you, the good people of the SOMD forums.
I have been called way worse then that.
