Which kind of doctor do I go to?

I have pain in my left elbow and wrist, and some numbness in the hand - it's been going on for several weeks now. What kind of doctor do I see for that? An ortho?

That sounds ignorant, I know, but I wasn't sure and didn't want to just get shuffled around, considering my hatred of the medical profession and my unwillingness to waste my time in their offices. :jet:

TIA!

neurologist. Maybe carpal tunnel or nerve problem in the elbow. They'll put electrodes on your hand, etc. Run shocks through it to see which nerves are working and which aren't. They did that to me and found the carpal tunnel.

I'd consider seeing someone who does sports medicine.

If you recall, the people who helped me with my shoulders TOLD me they'd rather I do a little PT with them, learn how and what to do on my own and see how it goes rather than just 'surgery!!!!!'

As long as I do the exercises, the pain is no big deal and rather minimal from pre PT and I have full range of motion.

It doesn't have to be a sports injury; they know, better than most, how the joints and muscles and ligaments, work. In my view.

Sort of what Larry said, although I would check your ergonomics for various things first. Maybe 7 years ago, had the same sort of stuff, except without the elbow stuff. Did a wrist splint, and took NSAIDs, but nothing really changed until I switched mouse hands from left to right. Nowadays, I use a trackball at work, and a right handed mouse at home, and thats it. No issues.

Another, later issue with my right wrist, I tracked to sleeping with it bent under the pillow. But, if your going to see someone, and you dont need a consult to do so, I vote ortho.

She's right handed with the mouse. In my view, the thing you get from physical therapy and from a correct diagnosis is that it allows you to keep doing what you normally do by simply adding the streching and exercises that address your specific ergo problem.

go to the Witch Doctor!

I told the witch doctor I was in love with you
I told the witch doctor I was in love with you
And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do
He said that ....

(Chorus:)
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang...
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang

I told the witch doctor you didn't love me true
I told the witch doctor you didn't love me nice
And then the witch doctor, he gave me this advice
He said to ...

(Repeat Chorus)

Now, you've been keeping love from me
Just like you were a miser
And I'll admit I wasn't very smart
So I went out and found myself
A guy that's so much wiser
And he taught me the way to win your heart

My friend the witch doctor, he taught me what to say
My friend the witch doctor, he taught me what to do
I know that you'll be mine when I say this to you
Oh, Baby ....

I'd suggest a neurologist. There is a long nerve that runs from your hand to your neck. If that nerve is pinched, it can cause pain like that... the numbness is the give-away for me, though.

Since specialists like Ortho's, Nerurologists/Rheumatologists (sp?) many times require a recommendation from a Primary Care Dr., you might want to call the office and ask if a recommendation is required, and go from there. Just let your fingers to the walking first, if they're well enough to.

I should have made this a poll with "majority rules."
You have this running thru your head don't you?

Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang...
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang

Here, see her.

How come no one told her to ask jp, I think she knows all specialists in the tri-county.

I AM an enigma
Dr. Travis in Leonardtown is a hand specialist, and could rule in or out carpal tunnel.

If by chance any doc that you see tells you that it's carpal tunnel I would suggest him for the surgery. Like I said above, hand are his specialty.

I had the surgery done 18 or so years ago, before they did the laparoscopic (or key hole) surgery and I have a HUGE Herman Munster scar that runs from the top of my palm all the way past my wrist.

As a side note tho, the scar does extend my life line! he he he

He did my left hand a few years ago. Not much of a scar. Haven't had a problem since except I think my right hand is starting to get it.
