whisper talking?

What?!
My 4 year old daughter has been "whisper talking" for a few weeks now. She says a sentence and then immediately whispers the same sentence to herself. She doesnt do it every time she talks but she does it a lot.

I have looked it up on the internet and they have some articles regarding this. I am just wondering if anyone here has a child that has done this and did you do anything to try to stop it? Did you go to a doctor and ask what the deal is?

Maybe your kid is doing it because she saw the kid off The Middle do it

I used to have a friend who did this.
:gossip:I used to have a friend who did this.

My neice did it too.
:gossip:My neice did it too.

It goes away after a while. Neither my neice nor my friend do it any more, and neither of them can explain why they did it in the first place. My friend, now a normally functioning and productive adult, offered the suggestion that he did it in order to reassure himself that he said the right thing, or used the proper words, and it just became a habit that he didn't think about or control.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Too bad more people don't do that mentally before they actually opened their mouth.

I guess we covered that the other day in a thread though didn't we?

Should have thought about that before I typed it.

I've done this ever since I can remember. It got worse during my teenage years and died off, so to speak, once I moved away from home. My friends and I still catch myself doing it from time to time though.

It is harmless, but reasons behind why I did it (in hindsight) were not.

For your sake, I hope you are able to determine what the cause is. Or at least come to grips with it. IMO, don't make a huge issue out of it with her and be supportive and loving.

Of course, if she starts whisperin "Redrum"... :yikes:

She went to see Dr. Sheth and he believes she is doing it because she has fluid in ears. He says this causes her to hear an echo which is causing her to repeat herself. He gave her an antibiotic and said hopefully she will stop repeating herself in 3-4 weeks.

if it was that bad, Wouldn't she feel pain? And why would her hearing herself twice, make her say it again? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But hey, if it helps, it helps.

My stepson did this too. I was talking to a co-worker about the same thing a few weeks ago and her daughter does it. I think it must be fairly common or quite a coincidence! I'm sure it will all turn out fine

I thought it seemed odd too. She has not complained of pain and he said it probably doesnt hurt her. He said he has seen kids with eye fluid do the same thing. Ill give her the amoxicillan and see if it helps.

We were in the middle of discussing my daughter when a nurse in training (I think thats what she was cause she was following Dr. Sheth around) passed out. Of course, all the attention was then focused on her and I felt bad taking anymore of his time cause he had to make sure the girl was ok.

Maybe by her saying it normally sounded really weird to her if she had an ear infection, so she would whisper it to make it sound normal.

Actually my two girls never had pain with ear infections. One would have a stomach ache so I knew it must be an ear infection, the looks on the Doctors faces was priceless, you could just read their mind, "oh boy another nutty Mom"! They would humor me and look in her ears and walla they would would have to admit I was right. The other one displayed no symptoms at all until the blood on the pillowcase from a ruptured ear drum appeared.

I had this same thing happen with my son. No pain with the ear infection, then suddenly goop was dripping out of his ear. I took him to the doctor, and doc proceeds to look at me like I am the worst parent ever, telling me how much pain son must have been in before the rupture. Doc did partially succeed in making me feel awful, but really - son never showed any signs of being in pain.
