White Sugar

Huntr's MSG thread got me thinking. Why is white sugar so bad other than calories? Why are alternate natural sweetners gaining so much appeal?

Anything in excess, that's the problem. Refined sugar, raw sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, fructose, etc. is all bad for you in high concentrations.

Pixie, I always figured it was like eggs, one minute it's bad for you and you should buy egg beaters for $4 vs $1 for a dozen eggs. The next minute they are good for you cause the egg industry lobbied for it.

If you buy a lot of stuff that has fructose, sugar, or corn syrup in it and eat/drink it, it's bad for you. If you have a spoonful of sugar in a cup of coffee and eat whole veggies and unproccessed junk, then there is no harm in it.

My doctor told me the fake stuff would kill me sooner than the natural stuff. She said always use it in moderation and you will be fine!

I saw that but thought the list was a little over the top to be wholeheartedly believable.

I think the moral of the story was that it raises your insulin levels, thus being harmful.
:yeahthat: Because it's been processed, it absorbs more rapidly than sugars that occur naturally, so it hits your system faster, causing insulin to be produced, that causes a rapid drop in blood sugar. So, if you eat too much you get a sugar rush, followed by a drain that leaves you craving more to eat.

I use raw agave nectar, raw honey and raw sugar. I know the agave doesn't spike your insulin as much as honey or sugar, it also has a pleasent taste. I used to use stevia a lot in my coffee but I don't drink coffee anymore. Another good reason not to use white sugar is that it is processed with phosphoric acid, bone char (yes animal bones), calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide.

Well said. I agree.

No food is bad for you. People keep trying to blame the foods. The foods aren't to blame. The way people eat is the problem.
