Who invented Internet?

Arlington, Virginia is taking the credit. Sorry Mr. Gore.

Plaque Says Arlington Invented the Internet | NBC Washington

But now, a plaque unveiled in Virginia on Tuesday will settle the dispute, once and for all. The internet was invented in Arlington.

The Arlingtion County Board said the new plaque, which will be on display at 1400 Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn, "will honor the creators of the forerunner of what we know today as the internet and the World Wide Web".

Truth is, the internet started in the 60's involving an underground network during the Cuban Missile Crisis. End of story.

Do you like apples?
Everybody knows Al did it.

That's right, because Al Gore created the internet, he got the world hooked onto sitting around on their computers all day and night playing games, chatting on facebook, downloading pron, etc. and getting fat. this required more use of electricity and therefore the coal burning plants of the world had to increase production and hence increase greenhouse gas emissions with an obvious result in global warming (err, climate change). So it logically follows that Al Gore created global warming too! :killingme

Who invented our Highway system?

Its about the same neboulous answer for a massive collaborative system that has evolved on its own over the decades, or for actual roads, eons.

I'm sure some town in Italy can put up a plaque claiming they invented the world highway systems, because the record of the first countructed road was in that town, doesn't make it true or tell the whole story.

People tell great stories about DARPA, and they do deserve credit for it and other things. BUT, thats like giving Einshower the credit for inventing the worlds hi-way systems, because he pushed the U.S. Interstate System while President (and it was for Military Defense Purposes that he wanted it). Or Hitler, that pushed the German AutoBhan.

No one invented or created the internet, any more than one person or entity created the worlds road and highway systems.

Alex: "Who is Robert Metcalfe"

Ethernet:

History

Ethernet was developed at Xerox PARC between 1973 and 1975.[1] It was inspired by ALOHAnet, which Robert Metcalfe had studied as part of his Ph.D. dissertation.[2] In 1975, Xerox filed a patent application listing Metcalfe, David Boggs, Chuck Thacker and Butler Lampson as inventors.[3] In 1976, after the system was deployed at PARC, Metcalfe and Boggs published a seminal paper.[4][note 1]

Metcalfe left Xerox in 1979 to form 3Com. He convinced Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Intel, and Xerox to work together to promote Ethernet as a standard. The so-called "DIX" standard, for "Digital/Intel/Xerox" specified 10 Mbit/s Ethernet, with 48-bit destination and source addresses and a global 16-bit Ethertype-type field. It was published on September 30, 1980 as "The Ethernet, A Local Area Network. Data Link Layer and Physical Layer Specifications".[6] Version 2 was published in November, 1982 and defines what has become known as Ethernet II. Formal standardization efforts proceeded at the same time.

Ethernet was originally based on the idea of computers communicating over a shared coaxial cable acting as a broadcast transmission medium. The methods used were similar to those used in radio systems,[note 3] with the common cable providing the communication channel likened to the Luminiferous aether in 19th century physics, and it was from this reference that the name "Ethernet" was derived.[12][13]

Ethernet ≠ Internet
Yea, Robert Metcalf and Ethernet deserve very valuable mention in the internet and computer networking, but thats like saying the inventer of asphalt created the worlds hi-way system.

nice analogy ......... but without those origins, site to site communication on something other than dial up, IMHO, things would not have moved so fast

Who invented our Highway system?

The Romans were the first to build paved roads linking the territories and military outposts.

In this country it was Dwight Eisenhower that proposed our interstate highway system to link military bases and provide rapid troop movement anywhere in the country.
