GM Recalls Chevrolet Cruzes for Safety Modifications

DETROIT – General Motors will recall 413,418 Chevrolet Cruzes in the United States for the 2011 and 2012 model years to modify the engine shield under the vehicle. This change will help prevent any liquids from being trapped in the engine compartment, where a fire could start and spread.

In a separate safety recall, GM will inspect certain cars included in the first recall to assure all welds in the rear compartment were properly applied. Omitted or partially completed welds in up to 249 cars may affect the fuel tank strap secondary brackets attachment to the floor structure and a sub assembly to the rear floor pan.

And this. You can wait for the letter, or just call for an appointment. That's what I would do.

Modifying the engine shield will take about 30 minutes in a Chevrolet dealership service department and will be conducted free of charge. No parts are involved and customers are encouraged to make an appointment with their dealer at their earliest convenience. Owner letters will mailed be beginning July 11. Inspection for the possible missing welds takes only a few minutes. In confirmed cases, the repair would take about three hours.

Oh, don't let this change your mind, really. Every maker has stuff like this, and this particular issue is fixed. I had a rental one recently myself to go to Dulles and it was pretty good, even in rental trim. A loaded one would be that much better, I imagine.

Were I in the market for this class of car, I think I would lean towards the new Dodge Dart, I think value/features, it will edge out the Cruze, but I'm biased a bit. Loved both of my last two vehicles, both Dodges. The Charger just passed 140,000 hard driven miles.

But I did like the Cruze.

I'm still thinking about it, I just liked the car all around. Really fun to drive, and like you said a loaded one would be that much better.

i have one, i love it, fully loaded the only thing i dont like is i got the black interior. will get the recall fixed and will continue to drive it with a big ole smile!

I have one too! I love it! Not one complaint, even with this recall. Which I read up on just this morning sounds like they haven't had any issues but don't want to take any chances.
Which makes me feel good.

Yup, I'm in that boat with the rest who posted here. I noticed there was a dateline involved; 'if you own a Cruze that was built between X/XX and X/XX.....'

I'm not sure if I'm gonna wait til Winegardner sends me the recall notices; not sure if they will; or just go up there one day; but I sent them an e-mail using their website, so I guess I'll find out what they're gonna do.
Thing is, I'd have to take time off to do it.
They don't do recall work on Saturday's, do they?

Afj, no biggie, you lose a few hours, not a big deal. Not as if they were ignoring the problem and stonewalling, that would be an aw crap, IMHO.

dee, I think those dates are from the start of production til like last month, so if you own one, it's part of the recall, they only applied the fix at the factory to ones that have not got to dealers yet. Me, given it's a fire risk, I would call and make an appointment, not wait for the letter.Your probability of being a unit that leaks into the pan is slim, but I would hasten to make it none. Wouldn't be running around with my hair on fire (inteneded:)), but I wouldn't wait around either

You're right. Better safe than sorry and all that.
Problem for me is, if they can't do anything on a Saturday, I'm kinda hosed.
