Why all the fluff?

Many Protestants like to point out all of the "extras" that Catholics use in our worship. People on this very board have even pointed out candles as being a silly and unnecessary part of the Mass. I have posted a video on here before of a letter from Justin the martyr to the roman ruler in 155ad describing the way the apostles of the apostles worshiped. Basically, the Catholic Mass today.

I have noticed a trend of late among large Protestant churches in SoMD like New Life in LaPlata and Chesapeake Church in Huntingtown. In addition to full on theatrical lights and praise and worship bands the new trend is skits. Mini plays if you will to modernize scriptural events. Why are these necessary? Do we really need to modernize scripture into a modern context? To me it says that the word itself is not good enough or the people listening are not intelligent enough to grasp what is being spoken.

I have met many P&W musicians and aspiring church actors. Most all are self-absorbed individuals that wear their religion on their sleeves.

Do you, or the catholic church, have something against electricity? Or music? Show me where the scripture has one note of music, one rhythm, as acceptable?

Your statement:

"I have met many P&W musicians and aspiring church actors. Most all are self-absorbed individuals that wear their religion on their sleeves."

And you aren't? Or don't?

What a hoot!

FM 90.5 is the local catholic station. They play the same songs as Moody (91.1) and the Joy FM (91.5). The latter two are evangelical stations.:yahoo:

My point was that all of the fluff--the sensory overload of lights, bands, skits seem to be man-made distractions that bring attention to the people themselves rather than a conduit to God. Catholic and Florida should never be used in the same sentence. Ave Maria University is the only Catholic bastion in Florida. I made the sign of the cross before breakfast at a Waffle House one morning and it almost caused a redneck riot

Anyone going to a Waffle House anywhere is not too bright.

:lmao: You are so weak, onel. No backbone at all. No doubt Md is the radical bastion of catholicism in the US. If you cannot survive outside it, stay on the porch, dude. Hide behind the internet.

I will transport your thought to my catholic buddies here - no doubt they will be sharpening their pitchforks anticipating your next arrival.

Apparently I've struck a nerve. I'll put my record on where I've been and what I've done overseas against yours any day if you'd like to discuss weakness
And backbone. Nice unfounded cheap-shot though. And I'll be honest, there's no way you have authentically Catholic buddies. If you do, then they are weak.

I don't like the "a" part of the icon - I prefer a "butt", but I have no regrets on what I said. The catholic church is as weak and undisciplined as any other denomination. You just essentially trashed the catholic community in Fl, and elsewhere that does not meet your "expectations", which will pretty much define the world, from Md, the bastion of radical catholicism in America. Every nationality outside the US, and obviously by your statement inside the US as well, has different catholic church opinions.

So much for the "universal" church.

Just get over it. Write a letter to the dioceses' in Fl explaining your dismay with the state of the church here. Seeing that about 65% of all attendees are not even from Fl, but from the northeast and mid-west, especially this time of the snowbird year, I would think you would have a lot of 'splainin' to do, Loosie.

The Bible is the answer, onel. The only answer. No other answer. All, and only, 66 books.

Please save me the trouble of looking through your previous posts and repost the link to the church you attend again...

I truly have no idea what your first sentence means.

I trashed nobody. I pointed out that the American south is not exactly the Catholic stronghold of the world. My comments to you about me being willing to compare records of what we've done and who we've served overseas was in response to you calling me weak and not having a backbone and nothing to do with religion.

I don't even know how to respond to your intellectually dishonest post. I'll try after I get home and have a shot or two and after I see the website of theologically superior place of worship you attend.

Are you on the govt clock while posting? I believe you told me you worked for ONI. If I'm wrong, I apologize about that. I would hope you are posting on your time and not the tax payers time (my dime).

I already gave out my home assembly info some time back. You have it. Are you threatening me, or us, by your not agreeing with our Biblical, evangelical doctrine? My answers are honest, to the point.

If you can't comprehend plain English, just tie it into your post before mine. That should give you some context. Try changing "a for ass" for "b for butt" and maybe you can figure it out.

If you can't deal with the realities of what the Bible preaches, that's your issue. If you can't deal with the "universal" church not being in lock step with your idea, or your church in MD of it, that's your issue.

Drive safely, and don't try and answer while behind the wheel.

onel0126, i agree with you. Being raised old Catholic when the priest had his back to the congregation, and the mass was in Latin. I believe i am much more of a traditionalist.

First, I would think it would be intuitively obvious that Facebook is not accessible within a building of the intelligence community. Second, have it your way about not posting your "home assembly" info; I'll look it up later--this in and of itself speaks to your paranoia as does your comment of me threatening you?!?!

facebook? I just see you posting on this site. I have nothing to do with facebook. Worthless. Snowden had no trouble in a highly classified position getting through all kinds of security. Reading many posts on this site about access being available via other govt sites, who knows?

I just love your "intellectually dishonest" comments. Just shows you have nothing to say, a very liberal, and in this instance, catholic, stance.

Just show me what is dishonest about what I said. Oh, wait, you can't.

Check your past. You promised you would get back to me on our breaking of bread communion every Sunday, but you never did. Does that ring a bell? You seemed to find our doctrine interesting.

Actually, it is just Biblical. What Jesus instructed the disciples to do to carry on in His memory, and to pass on to us. Matthew26, Luke 22, 1 Cor 11, Acts 2, are a good place to start. The rest of our doctrine is Biblically based as well. Not man made, man written. Just God breathed.

That is what you said you would check out and get back to me on.

Try to be honest. Your intellect will display that, or not.

I usually don't conversate on stuff like this but I see nothing wrong with skits, music and candles. Too me it would leave a deeper impression on those attending instead of just listening to someone talk for a while and it just make it more interesting. Skits can be pretty powerfull in my opinion. I would tend to think a child attending church would get more out of a skit than a speech too.

Skits are fine - especially during the younger (especially pre-teen) services. Music is always good, from the traditional hymns to Contemporary. I Like a good band with guitars to accompany a lot of the modern stuff. Not head banging, but I certainly favor a good electric guitar and bass line. Drums are OK for the modern stuff. For the beautiful old hymns, of which there are thousands, a good piano and/or organ is the right accompanying.

Candles - Christmas, weddings, maybe funerals - I'm old fashioned in that aspect.

JMHO, of course.

Wait a minute..... Are you slamming Waffle House? Oh no... you didn't....

In Kissimmee, Florida there is a Waffle House that helped me raise 3 children on my waitress wages. There were thousands of people who ate at the Waffle House every time they went to one of the many theme parks [including Bible World] in the area. I made a great living working with locals, tourists, truckers, and travelers. Waffle House was a great place to get a good meal at a good price for families on limited budgets.

So please don't dis the Waffle House.....

Please let me add here.... Waffles "fluff up" due to the ingredients.

Have you ever noticed that some people "fluff up" because they are trying to do their best for God!

I’m not sure if this was a real question or rhetorical:

"David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. He and all his men went to Baalah in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark. They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals." – 2 Samuel 6:1-5

“The Lord will surely save me; so we will play my songs on stringed instruments all the days of our life at the house of the Lord.” - Isaiah 38:20

Psalms is full of singing of songs and music.

Although I prefer a more staid and solemn worship and I probably wouldn't be caught dead at some huge Evangelical P&W thing, I don't see anything wrong with it. Imo, it's a meat/milk thing.

You know the trend I've noticed? More Protestant churches picking up the liturgical calendar. :yay:

Interesting. Are you referring to a similarity to the catholic liturgical calender? Do you have any links as examples?

Well, you put me on the spot. Yes, I am dissing the Awful House - my personal opinion on the food in general. No, I am not dissing the Awful House employees who have done their job at 0400 on the occasions that I have been there, at least in FL.

I'm glad for you that you were able to support your three young un's.
