Why compels me to do this, and why can't I stop?

Every year it's the same thing: for whatever holiday or special occassion, I always, and I mean ALWAYS, prepare too much food. I can see the writing on the wall for this coming Thanksgiving, and it'll be no different.

On the menu so far: a 17 pound turkey with homemade stuffing, real mashed potatoes with real gravy, candied yams, sweet corn, saute'd Brussels sprouts, a 12-pound spiral-sliced honey-baked ham, fresh baked yeast rolls, along with cherry pie, apple tarte tatin, pumpkin pie, a pecan pie, a cherry-almond roll, and an assortment of homemade cookies.

AND I'm looking to add more.....buffalo chicken dip and some sausage/cheese thingies for an appetizer, and a dip or two for earlier in the day. Going through the grocery store I'm just loading up the cart imagining what else I can cook for the day.

Now tell me this, why do I do it? Why do I make all of this food - clearly enough for 25 people, when we'll only have 10 of us for dinner? This is obscene. But I feel powerless to pull in my menu and reduce the amount of food that I prepare.

The funny thing is that I'll cook all of this stuff, and not be able to eat it myself (....let me clarify, I'l be able to eat some of it, but only about a small dessert plate full of food). I am purposefully going to wear my tightest pair of pants that I own so that I'll have a reminder not to overeat.

I should just open a damn restaurant.

Come on over and pick up a plate or two or six, even. Really.

We'll have enough food for the southern end of the county, and my fridge is too full to stash the leftovers.

My brother and sister in law always do the same thing. Everyone brings containers to take food home with them. My sister in law even bought me one of those insulated bags to carry food containers in for the drive home.

It would be awesome if you had tupperware/rubbermade with dividers. You could save full meals, labeled in the freezer, and have comfort foods ready at the beep of a microwave!

Thats a good idea, but heres the problem for me. I also always make way to much, and I hate leftovers, so it ends up going bad, and then by the time I get it out of the fridge, I cant recognize what it was that I originally made.

Yeah, that WOULD work, other than we don't even have room for a slice of bread in our freezer!!

We're ready for Armegeddon here. Pantry is stocked up, freezer couldn't be fuller, and two refrigerators worth of food and beer.

My mother does the same thing. She is cooking 2 turkeys this year. She makes so much food. But she invites military people that are stationed in the area and do not have family nearby.

I'd do that, but herein lies the real problem. I hoard food. Lots of food. All good food, too.

My kitchen fridge/freezer is full. My garage fridge/freezer is full. And even the large chest freezer in the garage is full. And if I showed you my walk-in pantry, you're eyes would glaze over at all the food I have stored in there. Simply put, I've got no place to put the leftovers.

But all my family and friends joke that my house is where you'd want to be in case of a famine or natural disaster. We'd have enough grub to eat for months.

And that brings me to another point: short of break, milk, eggs, and butter, we'd certainly be able to go in excess of three months without ever having to step foot in a grocery store.

My family used to do that as well. My brother was stationed in San Diego and any one from the ship that didnt have family in town came to our house for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I would love to do that out here :yay:
