My mother does the same thing. She is cooking 2 turkeys this year. She makes so much food. But she invites military people that are stationed in the area and do not have family nearby.
Good for her! That's great!

I should just open a damn restaurant.
Yes, you should!
I'm into Thanksgiving and Christmas excess. I can eat on leftover turkey as long as it holds out, and the rest of it reminds me that this is America, damn it, and we'll throw away food if we want to!
We'll contrast you with my mother, who has three pies for 9 people, but only a 12 lb turkey. I'm getting a ham today and will cook that in hopes the other guests will eat it and leave the turkey alone.
I think I'd rather have about 25 - 30 pounds of turkey and no ham..
LOTS of cranberry sauce.. and Miracle Whip for the after T-Day sammiches..
Oh and LOTS of gravy, for the hot turkey sammiches
Come on over and pick up a plate or two or six, even. Really.
We'll have enough food for the southern end of the county, and my fridge is too full to stash the leftovers.
Every year it's the same thing: for whatever holiday or special occassion, I always, and I mean ALWAYS, prepare too much food. I can see the writing on the wall for this coming Thanksgiving, and it'll be no different.

On the menu so far: a 17 pound turkey with homemade stuffing, real mashed potatoes with real gravy, candied yams, sweet corn, saute'd Brussels sprouts, a 12-pound spiral-sliced honey-baked ham, fresh baked yeast rolls, along with cherry pie, apple tarte tatin, pumpkin pie, a pecan pie, a cherry-almond roll, and an assortment of homemade cookies.
AND I'm looking to add more.....buffalo chicken dip and some sausage/cheese thingies for an appetizer, and a dip or two for earlier in the day. Going through the grocery store I'm just loading up the cart imagining what else I can cook for the day.
Now tell me this, why do I do it? Why do I make all of this food - clearly enough for 25 people, when we'll only have 10 of us for dinner? This is obscene. But I feel powerless to pull in my menu and reduce the amount of food that I prepare.
The funny thing is that I'll cook all of this stuff, and not be able to eat it myself (....let me clarify, I'l be able to eat some of it, but only about a small dessert plate full of food). I am purposefully going to wear my tightest pair of pants that I own so that I'll have a reminder not to overeat.

Probley the same thing that compels you to buy too much food. When you find out what it is please let me know I suffer with this diease also.
