Why do dogs eat grass?

For some unknown reason, my dog has started eating grass in the last 2 weeks. He has plenty of food, and we haven't changed brands or anything, but he keeps eating grass which makes him puke. Any ideas?

Have you changed his food, had him checked for worms. They eat grass to make them puke,

Some dogs are just grass eaters. But if this is a new habit, it could be he isn't feeling well. My older dog did the very same thing last week. He was also smacking his lips. When I'd take him out, he couldn't eat enough grass. Of course, then he'd come in and :barf: I took him off of food for 24 hours and that seemed to do the trick. You can do a search on google and it will give you different scenarios and ideas.

An afterthought...

maybe he knows you are looking for a new home for him and he's trying to make himself less appealing to any prospective new owners.

They do it when they have an upset stomach; I guess it settles it for them like an antacid.

Animals eat grass because it helps their digective system.

Hairballs too.

Lots of animals love it.

My cats love it too.

Maybe he's getting ready to hibernate. Animals who are preparing to hibernate eat a lot of grass. They also lick their own fur, and swallow the hairs, and then all the chewed up grass and all the hair mixes with the mucus in their stomach and make a big clotty mucus plug which lodges in their digestive track like a big mucusy-hairy-grassy low-flow regulator.

It helps slow down digestion for the long sleep.

:yeahthat: my dog eats grass also, usually when her stomach is upset. got to be careful if someone's sprayed weed killer, can make your dog sick enough to take to the vet :-(

Grass is kind of the "Ipecac syrup for dogs" -when their stomaches are upset they eat grass, or hair or anything that will stimulate their "gag" reflex. It's actually not very healthy, because they can disturb the lining of their stomaches. If you notice any blood in the vomit- take him/her to the vet right away.

I'm taking the cat to the vet on Wed., so I will ask about it then.

My dog likes to eat grass as well. I usually catch him before he starts chowing down on it though. But when he does eat it - he doesn't puke it up - so it comes out the other end. He took a poop one day and unfortunately 1 blade of grass didn't come out all the way...I had to pull it out...:barf:

Yes as others have said they eat grass sometimes when their stomach is upset. Sometimes it's because they lack minerals in their diet. Mine graze on grass, they just like to eat it, it became a habbit. Grass cannot hurt thier stomach lining. As someone mentioned, greens are actually good for dogs, parsley, lettuce, green beans etc.,

And the most obvious reason they eat grass is because they are not capable to roll it! Sorry I just had to add that!

"Vomiting and gastritis — Vomiting comes easily to dogs. Grass eating and subsequent vomiting give rise to all sorts of explanations, the most popular being that the dog was sick and ate the grass to help him throw up. Actually, excess grass is more likely the reason for the reflex action. Dogs mostly eat grass because they like the taste of it, just as with the case of garbage, but it does appear that individuals learn that too much can cause vomiting, so the intentional eating of grass to induce vomiting seems to come after experience. Gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining, can be caused by the ingestion of too much grass, garbage, or indigestible materials. It can also be caused by viral or bacterial invasion, but much more common, especially in pups, is the presence of endoparasites: tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and coccidia. The initial treatment for gastritis or vomiting may be the withholding of food and administration of Kaopectate™ every four hours. http://siriusdog.com/articles/torsion-dog-megaesophagus3.htm
