Why do dogs get hiccups?

My pup got hiccups at 4am this morning and had them for an hour. I wouldn't even have noticed if she hadn't been on the bed and every 10 seconds I got a jolt. She shook the entire bed.

Apollo doesn't get hiccups but he burps a lot. Better than the other end, though.

my dog can get them for no odd reason. she will be laying on the floor next thing u know shes got the hiccups. she also gets them after she eats sometimes. She is also like apolo though and she burps alot. she burps after she eats most of the time or if she spends time licking her paw when she is done she will burp.

I always thought of them as "growing pains" but in the diaphragm. Our dogs did that allot as puppies but now only when they eat too fast.
