I have someone who comes up as CBE Group calling my work number about a thousand times a day. It's a debt collection agency looking for someone who is not me and who I've never heard of.

Happens to us too, but I don't answer calls I don't recognize. There's someone with the same last name as me who owes a lot of people money. They live about a mile from me, on a different road, and their street address is the same digits as mine. I could understand if my last name was unusual, but it is one of the most common in the English speaking world.

My wife still answers, tells them they have the wrong number, and has even found the right number and passed it on to them. They still call all day, every day. Idiots.

The first time I answered I figured it was just a wrong number and told them there was nobody named so-and-so at this number. The second time I told them to stop calling here and take my number off their list because THERE WAS NO ONE NAMED SO-AND-SO AT THIS FREAKING NUMBER.

They continue to call every single day. This has been going on for weeks and now I don't even bother to answer. I either ignore it or hit the Talk and let them listen to air.

Why do spammer orgs do that? I can think of no reason except for the pure harassment of it. Obviously it's a robocall, but what is the purpose of that? Do they think so-and-so is suddenly going to magically appear in my office? Are they just trying to piss me off? There must be money involved in some form - that is what always motivates these callers/spammers/junk mail idiots - but I cannot think for the life of me how that would transpire.

Anyone?

I'm getting the same calls - VERY annoying, as I work nightshift and have to keep my phone turned on in case there's an emergency with my daughter. Some days they call HOURLY.

I'm with MadDogMarine on this. You have to make an effort to correct their error if you want it to stop.

I hate it when the giant answers the phone and listens and then clicks off with out saying a word.

"Why didn't you say I want my name and number removed from your calling list?"
"Because they were a telemarketer."
"Exactly! If you don't make an effort to speak up and tell them to remove you from their list, they will keep calling."
"Well then I'll keep hanging up."

I have requested telemarketers stop calling here and they call anyway. I'm on the Do Not Call - no difference. I tell them the person they are trying to reach is not here; they do not care.

Yes, I suppose if you have a lot of time on your hands you can go on a letter writing campaign or contact your State's Attorney or join a class action lawsuit. But I have better things to do than make a hobby out of trying to fight spammers and telemarketers.

How are you going to tell a robocalled recording to stop calling your number? If you get a human, at least you can ##### them out and vent your spleen.

They know this and that's probably why they don't care. Honestly, how many of us could/would put the time and money into pursuing a company for calling them too often when we can just hang up and deal with it for free?

It doens't cost them any money, really, especially the electronic ones; they could potentially reach the person they're looking for; there's very little consequenses for their actions if they act inappropriately.

Marine, they are not looking for me. They are not alleging that *I* owe anything. They don't ask for me, nor did they try to sell me anything once I informed them that the person they were looking for is not at this number.

That is my question: why would they continue to call?

I haven't read this entire thread, so forgive me if this is useless. When we first moved here we received calls multiple times a day for someone else. We told them over and over that she was no longer at this number, blah, blah, blah. To no avail.
Eventually, after months and months of this I said, "This is she". The person of the other end then went into the financial issues with me of this other person. At the end I revealed to them that I actually was NOT the person they were seeking. Well, lo and behold the guy was all freaked out because he had revealed someone else's private financial info to me. He went so far as to say something-along-the-lines-of recording my admission that I had lied to him in case something came of this.
We never heard from them again.

For about ten years after I got my number, I'd get calls from someone named "Bamboo" that wanted me to accept a collect call from a prison. Or calls in the middle of the night saying "yo, it me."
