I've noticed that everywhere there is construction and the ground is torn up it has a funky odor. I was at BJ's the other day and I thought it was a dumpster but I didn't see one anywhere.
Quite often down here when you do alot of digging, you will uncover a pocket of "swamp gas" or some partially decayed material (i.e. buried wood that is rotting) underground since so much of the area is so close to the water table.
