Adopt me please !
Adoption at the shelter is a direct way to save a life. However, if you adopt from a rescue group you can usually get more information about the pet's personality to consider in making a choice for a pet. We intercept many critters to keep them away from the shelter, so adopting one of ours allow us to intercept another critter that won't have to go to the shelter.
Whether you adopt from the shelter or a rescue group, you make space for more critters to be spared at the shelter. I wanted to share the statistics from the month of March in just 1 County (PG):
They had 583 new intakes which averages to 18 critters a day! OMG I had no clue there could be so many intakes in 1 day in 1 County. Of those they show that 47 of those critters were from owners requesting euthanasia. The bottom line shows that 66.8% of intakes were live-released (via adoptions, to rescue groups, or to owners), the rest were euthanized. I don't like reading stuff like this, however, I think it's necessary for us all to be sure that everyone clearly understands how many critters have to die each month simply due to lack of a decent home. So many of us have made spay/neuter a big priority and that has helped surely. I wish we had money to do tv spots to highlight the friendly faces of those facing death if they don't get adopted.
We won't be satisfied until NO healthy pet has to be put down due to lack of a decent home. We do what we do because if we didn't, many of the critters we have helped would have ended up at the shelter.
