I don't really understand this (I'm not technologically inclined at all ) so not sure how much of a risk WiFi hackers really are.

Routers using WPS are intrinsically unsafe
By Fred Langa
Simple hacker tools can easily sniff out Wi-Fi passwords from routers that have Wi-Fi Protected Setup enabled — quite possibly yours included.
Here's how to protect your network — and even hack your own router to see whether it's vulnerable.

An IT-type buddy of mine set up my WiFi; and he's pretty sharp.
I haven't had; nor do I foresee any problems.

First thing is a threat assesment. My old house, I could see three different neighbors networks, and only two of them had any protection. New house, cant see any, and there is no place where anyone could stop a car and sniff around. So, the first step is to know how vulnerable your network is to other people.

Well, to the average home owner, I'd say not much. Your greatest worry would be someone using your home network to download illegal items like music or movies.
The TV cops could come busting down your door for something you didn't even know happened. They would take anything that could be used to record things, your computers and off-line storage.
My own WAP doesn't broadcast the name, only allows authorized NIC cards to use it and implements security and a firewall. Even with that, I sometimes see people trying to get in. :cds:

I know nothing
Also disable your SSID broadcast... Disabling this allows you to prevent users who do not know your SSID name from accessing your Router wirelessly.

Seriously, I have one for my job to diagnose problems.

During my Security+ course they had a term for people who'd drive around to look for networks (obviously those that are broadcasting)...

Anyway, the instructor mentioned WireShark (I think)... not going anywhere with this story... just reminded me of the class...
