That's not IN Jacksonville. I lived in FL. Crime in Jacksonville is awful. It has one of the highest crime rates in the US.

maybe downtown is bad, but Jacksonville is a huge city...biggest in the US in area. The city limits of Jacksonville include all of Duval county :yay:

Just like all major cities in the US. Some areas are bad and some are okay. My point was that Jacksonville's crime rate is way higher than southern MD's.

Southern MD is really nice, I will miss it here but the cost of living is not justified... I am from Silver Spring so I am definitely used to crime. MD is just not the place for someone young and on their way up...

Meaning that it is possible.

It's alot easier to live her as a young single person with no children. There are a ton of great jobs on base and a ton of 1 bedroom places for rent for a decent amount.

I know it is possible. I have lived on my own since I was 18 and I am now 21. I work as a software developer for a defense contractor. I am just unhappy that so much of my money goes to rent. In my opinion there aren't many affordable 1 bedroom apartments. Mine is $1100/month and super tiny... I know some are out there for somewhat cheaper but I prefer to rent from a company and not an individual...

I have no kids, not married and have never taken a hand out from the government. I just want my money to go further that is why I am moving out of MD. MD has an extremely high cost of living any way you look at it...

You're paying way too much. I've seen a bunch of 1 bedrooms for well under that amount.

I realize now that I am paying a lot for my apartment but I had a hard time finding openings when I was looking. I would say though that the average price for an apartment in St. Mary's county rented from a company is around $900, unless you know something that I don't.

Either way nothing here is going to beat the prices in JAX...

you're right...the average rented from a company is around $900...but most of the complexes out here are ghetto. I've heard negative things about virtually all of the apartments other than the 3 listed in the topic here. And you won't get anything at those for $900...

I have heard bad things about all of the apartments listed as well. I can't say that my stay at Hickory Hills has been terrible but I never felt like I was getting my moneys worth... A 1 bedroom apartment in St. Mary's county is just not worth $900/month in my opinion.

I wish Hickory Hills would get rid of the ridiculous gate, widen the parking spots and enforce parking... Those were my 3 biggest issues other than price... I imagine the other places have similar issues...

I can say that Hickory Hills is probably the most pet friendly community around though and that is a big deal to a lot of people...

Hickory Hills

why no love for the Hills, Hickory that is?? You know it's the safest of the four with it's state of the art gate system! :killingme

Hickory Hills is off of chancellors run rd. Away from Great Mills/Lexington Park. check the house rentals too..how much are you wanting to spend?

Thanks for the help everyone. I am going to weigh my options...the hunt continues...thanks! :)

The absolutly best way is to call the school transportation office at 3014754256 and ask the name of the bus driver and bus # serving the area, then call the busses contractor and ask to speak directly to the bus driver. bus drivers alway know whats going on and observe the areas daily, they know what areas they would not live in themselves. they are not bound by law not to gossip about anything.

When I moved down here I looked at Wildewood and Abberly Crest, and chose to move into Abberly. The rent is high, but it's nice. The office staff is friendly, and I've had fast responses by the maintenance team. The complex is quiet, and I think it's in a good location (I work down at Webster Field and the commute is a breeze). If you want more opinions, you can look at a post I made back in August asking the same question. Here's the link if you want (http://forums.somd.com/life-souther...on-park-california-apartment-suggestions.html). Good Luck!

I'm sure some areas are fine but i really dont want to live somewhere that "some" of the areas are ok. I want to feel safe all of the time.

"some" of waldorf is ok but I would not live there either.

Then you better move out of Maryland entirely then, or at least go west of Hagarstown.

Hello,

I moved to Abberly Crest 1 month ago. I am very pleased with the apartment, we moved into the newest phase so everything was brand new! The ceilings are high and I personally think we have plenty of space! There are two of us in the two bedroom, 2 bathroom unit. There is a seperate small laundry space, great storage and amazing walk in closets! I feel your pain, having just gone through it! The rent seems expensive here at first glance but it also includes internet and expanded basic cable. This combined with the cost of rent I was coming from in Boston makes it seem like a screaming deal! Good look with your hunting!
