Wildewood Retirement

I'm looking for a place for my Mom to live. I looked at Wildewood Retirement Village and it looks pretty nice. I was wondering if anyone knew anybody who lived there, or in another retirement type community around here, and had any opinions about it. Asbury in Solomons is another one I'm going to look at today possibly. TIA.

It depends on if your mother is an "active senior". There are communities that cater to the active seniors and provide a lot of activities and amenities geared towards their active interests. I wouldn't categorize Wildewood as the ideal active senior community. Another thing to consider is your mother's needs, i.e., will she require assisted living? They currently do not have assisted living, although it is under new ownership and it may be something they are pursuing.

Yeah, I got that. She's not real active, but still likes to get out sometimes. The assisted living is a consideraton in the future. The lady did not mention that they were looking into it. Thanks.

I know some folks who live in the retirement community at Wildewood (beyond the gate) in a regular home. I haven't been in the facility for years, but they did have assisted living some years ago in the main building. Quite a few amenities on the premises, including banking, salon, etc. I'm not sure what changes they've been through over the years, but I do remember it being quite nice.

I know a couple that has a condo in the place on Peggs road. VERY nice inside, heated indoor pool.

I am so very blessed
If your mom is still mobile and active, she might do well in living in the same place that my mom resided at for awhile prior to her stroke. When she was still healthy, she lived off of Pegg Rd in the senior apartments there [Lexington Park Adult Community - 21895 Pegg Rd Lexington Park - 240-725-0111]. She was the first tenant in her 2-bedroom apartment, and it really was quite lovely. The facility had a beautiful common room, an indoor pool, a jacuzzi, library, computer room, etc. She loved living there, and enjoyed being close to shopping, doctors, and friends and family. Had she not had her stroke, she would still be living there, loving every minute of it. The place is designed for people over 55, and all residents were ambulatory, some even having regular jobs and community interests.

When her health declined and she required 24-hour nursing care, she moved in to Solomon's Nursing Center off of Dowell Rd in Solomons. They had a dynamite program where she could meet with various therapists (occupational, speech, physical, etc.) to try to get some kind of recovery of her lost abilities. Because these rooms were in the "medical" side of the house, they were quite sterile. Clean, nice, and well-staffed, but still pretty sterile. On the other hand, Solomon's Nursing Center also has another section dedicated to folks who do not require medical treatment. Those apartments are very lovely, too.

Good luck!

Asbury was ok, but I'm a little weirded out about the buy in fee. I guess it's like rent up front that you don't get back if you die or end up in the hospital or something. The fees were 50% higher, but the location is awesome. Search continues.

Asbury will suck her and you financially dry, then send her off to a local nursing home after she's broke and can qualify for medicaid.. Even if you "buy" one of the houses, you need a huge downpayment, finance the house, and still pay a monthly fee to live there... then they progress to assisted living.. then to the nursing home.. I lived next to the place and would walk by the nursing home every night, and would NEVER see any of the residents walking in the hallway or milling about outside of their rooms.

There is an adult/ retired community out front by the entrance (not affiliated with Asbury as far as I know) it's a 55 and over, retired, no kids..it's small, well cared for and brand spanking new..

Down Dowell Road in Solomons (almost across Rte 4 from Asbury). there is a Nursing home, but it's in two parts.. the front is an assisted living home, the back is a nursing home..

One of the nicest Nursing Homes I've seen, nice staff etc. And they keep the staff of one seperate from the other. ie a Nurse gets hired to work in the assisted living, that's where she works and is dedicated to.

I think the assisted living portion is called the Heritage House? but not sure.

They had some odd sounding programs and a convoluted way of dealing with money. Made me nervous. Thanks.

There was an ad in the local newspaper Friday about a Farm for assisted living. It looked really nice, but sorry already threw the paper out, it was a full page ad. Had pictures. There was a phone number listed also. Good luck. Sorry I forgot to mention it was in St. Mary's County.
