5 games won
4 gamesblown out
5 games lost by a field goal or less
1 game lost by a touchdown
1 game lost by 4 points
Just about any coach could win 5 games with the Redskins talent, so, it is probably fair to say that Joe can manage that as well.
The Gibbskins of old got killed on occaision as does everybody, so, it is rather easy to see 5-4, yes?
Now, the Spurrierskins lost 7 games by a touchdown or less. That's one play per game. ONE.
So, the question: Is Joe Gibbs worth ONE play per game? One defensive stop or turnover. One touchdown run or pass or even a first down to keep the ball. One special teams field goal or good return or stop of the other guys.
Hell, how about ONE LESS FREAKIN PENALTY per game?
What 'high expectations' are we talking about here???
That's how close Spurrier was to success. It's the same for every team in the league in the age of free agency. One play. The Patriots got blown out once, lost another game by one play (to us) and won 7 others by ONE PLAY. They could have been 7-9.
Now, as this is over simplified, let's follow this through: The case is made by me for a 12-4 season but perhaps the one or two games a play ISN'T made but I also think it is safe to say it is unlikely that Gibbs is going to be blown out in four games. So, we lose one or two we shouldn't have lost and we win one or two we shouldn't have won. so, on balance, 12-4 is still reasonable with the SAME team.
Additionally, the Redskins will NOT have the same weakness at back up QB. What's that worth? A play a game?
We WILL have a running game. What's that worth? A play a game?
We WILL have a decent D line. What's that worth? A play a game?
We will have a TE for hot routes and play action. One good play a game?
All of this does not happen in a vacuum, obviously, and every team is trying to do their best, obviously. I just think it is easy to see where Joe Gibbs and the people he is bringing in and the decisions they will make in personel and coaching and attitude will be worth the razers edge between winning and losing in the NFL week in and week out.
In summary, making the playoffs is not the question.
