Annoying.

I googled and am doing a system check right now; if that doesn't work there's a powershell command I'm supposed to try. If that doesn't work, I'm supposed to roll back. This is from the Microsoft help site, so it's real and not some random dummy. The problem with rolling back is that my understanding is that I lose any docs/changes/etc I've made since then.

So #1, Hey Microsoft! How about instead of telling us how to fix your ####, you fix your own #### and stop releasing buggy software??

#2, has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it? I trust people on here, yes, more than I trust some non-English speaking guy in a foreign country doing Microsoft tech support.

PS, I am highly rudimentary when it comes to actual computers, so any suggestions you make please include a Walkthrough for Dummies. :flowers:

I just Googled the problem too and found this solution that does not mention reinstalling Windows. You might give it a try. (Have you tried doing a system restore to a time prior to the problem?).

Thanks! I did the Powershell command and that fixed it but I seriously hate doing stuff like that because I don't really know what I'm doing.

I will bookmark that page for when (not if) it happens again.

Heard there's too many problems with Windows 10. Not going to upgrade to it.

It has different problems than Win8, not necessarily worse. In general, I like Win10 and I like the more recent upgrade of it, but I don't like the bugs every single version has had since the beginning of time. I seriously don't like Cortana, though.

I don't know if I have just been lucky or what but I have been running Win 10 since the first week it came out and have not had a single problem with it (yet).

I just watched a good YouTube video the other day on different tweaks for Win 10 and you can actually download Start Is Back which will let you make the start button exactly mimic older versions of Windows. You might want to give that a try. Here is the link and it is highly rated. I ran a different version of the same program with Windows 8 and liked it a lot. (There is a free trial version and if you decide you like it the cost is only $2.99).

I've had this happen before and the problem seems to occur right after an update. I would love to be able to turn off automatic updates, but apparently the only way you can do that is to switch your network setting to metered connection, which comes with its own problems. I understand why MS wants to force security updates - believe me, I take phone calls from these folks every day - but they could at least hide the setting somewhere so people like me can turn it off and people like 85 year old Mrs. McGillicuddy will never realize they have that option.

If you have the pro version you can turn off auto updates, but not on the home version. It requires a round about means to do it (group policy controls), but it works. I wouldn't have upgraded if I couldn't turn off auto updates as I don't like my bandwidth to be reduced when I'm in the middle of something.

I have also had problems with the start button not working on my second computer with the home version. I had to restart to make it work again each time. I've never had that problem on my computer with the pro version though.

Thinking about a new computer. Mine is about 8 years old. The only operating sys is effing Windows 8.1 or 10. Probably the only reason I won't get a new computer. Anyone have problems with 8.1?

Vista? Really? I've heard that Vista has a lot of compatibility issues. That's the reason they did Windows 8. I have Windows 7 currently and I like it, but if you get a new computer they're going to preload it with Windows 8.1 or 10. Now I'm thinking of building my own and loading it with Windows 7.

Had 8.1, 10 is a lot better. Had a few issues with 8.1 so I switched immediately to 10 when it became available and haven't had a problem since. Haven't even rebooted my pc since late last summer or early fall. I know some have had issues with 10 but I have yet to have any problems.
