Anyone upgrade yet?

I upgraded my HP Elitebook 8510 as an experiment ... seems ok so far, it really is too early to tell

on a side note, after you have allowed the in place upgrade to take place,
and your Windows 10 is 'activated'
a snapshot of your hardware is uploaded to Microsoft
any future 're-installs' including clean wipes or replacement hard drives are automatically activated
... no license key required - although you could use piece of software to archive that is you wish

My first issue, Ethernet has dropped a few times. Diagnostics doesn't fix it; command line doesn't fix it either. I can disable it but when I try to re-enable it nothing happens. I have to reboot to clear. I turned off some power saving settings and a few patches came down. We will see if that works.

One thing I don't like is the screen displayed a message "Rebooting..." and I thought it was stuck so I power cycled it. Turns out it was installing patches. When it rebooted it let me know the installation failed and it removed the patches. Then I manually forced the install and hit the reboot. The old way in 7 was better where it displayed a message that patches were installing.

Anyone have an idea on how long it takes to get the download? I reserved at the end of June and am still waiting to find out when I get to upgrade.

You don't have to wait. I got tired of waiting and Googled how to download and got the upgrade through the provided Microsoft site, it also explains how to download the .iso file so you can do a clean install AFTER you upgrade. Just make sure you upgrade first before you do the clean install.

Been running it for over a week and a huge improvement over Windows 8 and 8.1

I cannot wait to upgrade my laptop but I have to wait for a few driver updates so I may not be able to do so for another 8 weeks. On the desktop I upgrade, I will say HUGE improvement.

This may seem so insignificant to most but the calculator on windows 10 is fantastic, so much so, that I hate using the one on my desktop at work (windows 7). I deal with hundreds of thousands of dollars every month and it is very nice to have a large functional calculator on my PC when making reference to calculations.

somdfunguy,

As far as the patch installs, I have had zero issues in 10 vs. 8/8.1. I swear I had to try several times to get patches installed prior and this time it seemed to roll with ease. Now that you have the patches installed, hopefully future installs will go smoother.

Is there anyway to get the upgrade without going through Windows Update? My HP Mini has a glitch where it says the Windows Update service is not running, even though everything else says it is. Even the supposed patch from Microsoft didn't fix the problem.

Look in your system tray icons. I'm running 8.1 and there is an icon just for the upgrade, don't know if it's there on earlier versions. It looks like the new Windows logo.

Thanks. I'm running 7 SP 1. No icon in the tray. My issue is Windows Update is not automatically checking for updates (even though it is configured to) so it has no clue about the Win 10 upgrade. When I try to manually check for updates, I get the service not running error message.

I went and check my Win Updates and found I was missing 14 of them so I ran it last night so my updates are all current now.

I finally got my HP Mini updated and Windows 10 installed. (It took two days to get Win 7 completely updated before I could install Win 10.)

So far everything looks okay, but I have noticed with the Mini not running any applications, the hard drive access light flashes continuously. Has anyone else noticed this?

I just updated. It took me a little while to get it set up how I wanted using customized settings but it has a nicer look I think. All my programs seem to be working with it so far but it will take a little getting used to the windows edge instead of internet explorer.

I updated to windows 10 this weekend on my computer with windows 8.1 pro. The upgrade went pretty smoothly and was faster than I expected. I did a manual update using a link on the Microsoft web page. With the pro version I was able to set windows update to notify me, rather that to automatically download updates, via the group policy editor (gpedit) which was one of my major concerns (I don't like things downloading when I'm working or streaming video and using up my bandwidth).

Only problem so far is that my CAC reader will not work so I can't connect to my work web email server. I also had to turn off the feature of the search button that looks on the web, since it seemed to want to check the web over my computer for everything.

I'm also a bit irritated with the edge browser as it doesn't seem to let me open multiple instances of the browser from the icon. I had a web music player running (not a regular browser window, more like a pop-up window that has no menus) and wanted to check something on another site, but couldn't open another window. Right clicking the icon does nothing and left clicking it just makes the current window active. Clicking around on that window did nothing either since it was just a pop-up type window. I had to close the music player window and reopen the browser basically ending the music. With Internet explorer or google chrome I can just right click the icon on my shortcut bar to open another window. It also always opens on my main monitor rather that the second monitor I want it on regardless of where it was when I closed it and doesn't seem to remember the window size and shape of the previous session.

Overall I don't see much change from 8.1 other than moving a few things around. But the edge browser seems sub par.
