What is the command that is used to check and uncheck programs from the startup list? i thought it was config.exe but that doesn't work. I want to turn off programs like Quicktime auto update and Itunes helper.

Thank You!

Juggy, odd we have the same issue, except I think I am a little more advanced in the problem than you.

((((((((((ANYONE)))))))))))

I did the msconfig thingy trying to turn off startup programs. In all I couldn't find the ones I see on the right hand side of the task bar (like Event Planner and MusicMatch Quickplay). but I turned off a few things that I thought I didn't need starting.

Now, I am having problems such as I can not get my Kazaa Gold to load. It opens the page in a blank white screen with the menu at the top but it clicks repeatedly like it's going to the web page but never does, just clicks. So I haven't been able to download any music.

I tried to do System Restore but it will only allow me to go back as far as last Sunday but I made the changes on last Saturday. In addition each time my pc starts up into windows I get four (possibly two to a file) error messages that tell me that a file could not be found and its about 6 block symbols (not letters) of a file name.

Before I msconfigged I saw in the list four file names with block symbols and they were checked I didn't bother them but after I made the changes I only see two files (block symbols) in the list. I don't know what I have done or how to undo it.

I tried seeing about my firewall for the Kazaa thing but it's allowed already so it's not being blocked by that. I assume I can download Kazaa again if I uninstall it and maybe that will work.

But what should I do for the other errors? TIA :flowers:

I gave up on that type of advice, people do it anyway... Kazza is a virus invitation program....:lmao: :killingme Hell, I think it may be a virus itself...

I usually do stay away from altering any files I am unsure about. That lasted only a year. Kazaa is a bad thing? It was through research on here that I took the green light for it.

So far Kazaa is ok, I haven't been able to find a lot of the popular songs without the dirty words even after putting "clean" and "radio" for radio versions in the search box.

Ok back to the problem at hand. What should I uninstall and reinstall? Windows XP? Because the errors are coming up when my pc finishes loading to my desktop after I turn it on.

It's like it's telling me that something that once was there is no longer there. I did the Normal, Diagnostic and Selective options on msconfig and Diagnostic showed me nothing because it wasn't a regular boot to XP.

I am thinking to do DELL support chat this evening. Does anyone recommend this?

msconfig startup area doesnt touch what Services does. beware, screw up here, and you'll really screw it up. turn off services you dont need or look fishy.

to get to Services, Search your root drive "Services" (looks like a gear, its in your /windows directory, depends on the OS you use) or find it in your Administrative icon under control panel

Sounds about right.

I will check this when I get home. Thanks!

You probably aren't going to know what a lot of the services are for. Try this:

1. From a command prompt (Start, Run, cmd.exe) type: "srvinfo >c:\my_services.txt" - but leave off the quotes. This will dump a lot of information into a file.

2. Find the file my_services.txt in C:\ and open it in Notepad.

3. Find the section starting with "Services:". It will look something like this:

Services:
[Stopped] Alerter
[Stopped] Application Layer Gateway Service
[Stopped] Application Management
[Stopped] ASP.NET State Service
[Stopped] Ati HotKey Poller
[Running] Windows Audio
[Running] Background Intelligent Transfer Service
[Stopped] Computer Browser

4. Copy all of the services in that file and paste them into a post in this thread. We should be able to spot anything that shouldn't be there and will tell you what you can try next.

Thanks, I will do this as well, I don't like this part of having a computer. :frown:

Out of curiosity did you ever turn the things back on that you disabled? It may just be that you turned off something that you need.
