Though there have been many reports of trouble logging in to Hotmail in the
past few days, as well as weird homepage changes, and SLOW webpage downloading....YOU MUST CHECK YOUR SYSTEM for "hijackware".
This is NOT an Earthlink or dialup issue it is Hijackware!!!!

HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

I have Spybot on my computer. I run that a couple of times a week. I also installed something from Earthlink's website a few months back that is supposed to catch it before it gets on your computer, but Spybot still finds it, so I don't know how well that one works.

I am working on getting the CD with McKafee (or whatever it's called) from our IT department. Hopefully will bring it home tonight.

I just picked up the disk from our IT department with the McAfee that we can install on our home PC. It will get the automatic updates too, so HOPEFULLY we are covered.

Software

Some really awesome spyware/virus protection is Trend Micro's PCcillin. This stuff is great. They also have a totally free scan on their website. The software itself ya gotta buy, but it detects all viruses, spyware, and trojans. All they do is this stuff unlike Norton or McAffee. I think they even have a free 30 day trial that you can download. Give it a try, I think you will like it. I have used it since 2002 and it is the only thing I use at home. It also works for laptops, and wireless devices like PDA's, etc.

Oh another thing for XP

Also, if you haven't done so, get the Service Pack 2 update for XP. I have cable and it took a while so be prepared, but definitely download it.

I use Norton Anti-Virus to guard against computer virus's. It's automatically updated twice a week.

Additionally, I dowloaded Ad-Aware (free) software to combat spyware and trojans.

Both of these seem to help me to surf the Superhighway with my High-Speed Cable modem service.

I have heard of people who get a new high speed connection and get hacked within 15 minutes to 1/2 hour.

PCcillin

You really should try this. They update daily, and sometimes twice a day. It is also made for cable and dsl connections because they are at risk. It also has an emergency lock feature in where it notifies you if you get so much as a ping attack. You can activate the lock where it temporarily stops all incoming and outgoing internet traffic. I seriously recommend it. Give it a try, and if you don't like it, of course go back to the other common ones. It isn't the cheapest, about 40 bucks or so for your first copy, but the yearly upgrades are only about 20 bux. It works so well that I was able to convince our IT department to try it a year ago, and they have used nothing since on our entire network. It really is that good.
