I dont drink wine at all...WTH is Burgundy?

Long story short my mother who normally hosts our families Christmas Party each year has been very sick and asked me to take the honor this year. She brought over a roast that she had already purchased and gave me $ to buy the rest of the things for sides, desserts, etc...

I saw a recipe for Burgundy Mushrooms which I thought would go really well w/ the roast & other sides I am making. I just cant figure out what burgundy is. I went to the liquor store last night and the only burgundy they had was either in a box or a huge jug...I just know that cant be it...is it?

Is their a substitution?

You watching Pioneer Woman? :yum:

Burgundy is just a red wine from France. My first sub choice would be a Merlot. Second choice is a Cabernet.

Didnt those look good!?!?!? Everything else was just ehhh, but those mushrooms looked yummy :yum:

Ok so then the retard at the liquor store who told me to get Marsala is trying to sabotage my recipe then

I wonder if they will let me exchange it :tap:

They did. I even told the giant they were on the list to make. :yum:

I'd take it back. Marsala is a sweet wine like sherry. Ick. Which is fine for somethings, but I think it would screw up those mushrooms. Didn't they cook all day?

Yea for 9 hours. I am thinking I might just throw them in the crock pot after they come to a boil.

That's a good idea, then you don't have them taking up stove space and don't have to worry about the stove top being on all day.

You have to let me know how these things turn out. They looked so silky yummy good.

I will. So merlot is the best option then?

Well, the best option would be to fly to France and pick up a bottle of burgundy from some quaint Frenchman in a little village and drink with him and eat cheese and stuff and totally forget about cooking.

However, unless you want to be scrambling all over the place looking for a bottle of wine, just grab the Merlot. It's a perfect subsititute. A Cabernet would do in a pinch, but I'd get the Merlot.

Ok will do! Very excited about this recipe. You should see the roast my mother bought it is freakin huge! But then again there will be 20 some people there.

What other side dishes do you think would go?

You have to do some kind of potato, some kind of roll/bread and something green.

Oh, how about a baby spinach salad with bacon crumbles, hard boiled egg wedges and homemade honey mustard dressing?

And you could do popovers for your bread - different than biscuits/rolls.

:yum: I'm hungry.

Haven't read all the post yet, but if you haven't been told-- the burgundy wine sauce can be found in Foodlion where the cooking wines are (ususally over by the spaghetti sauces and on the top shelf).

I actually perfer my mushrooms with a Sherry wine sauted with garlic and butter.

This cooking wine is not to be confused with drinking wine.
Do not drink the cooking wine :barf:

True that. But if you wouldn't want to drink it straight, you shouldn't be cooking with it, either. Use a good and delicious wine to drink AND to cook with. Life is too short to drink or to eat someting prepared with bad wine.

The recipe included a bottle of wine - not the sauce stuff.

If I may suggest, don't cook with anything you wouldn't drink. It makes a huge flavor difference.

Oh good idea w/ the spinach salad, that would be a nice fresh addition. Right now the menu I have is the roast, mashed taters, mac & cheese, the mushrooms, green beans, brussel sprout casserole, and yorkshire pudding.

Now does more $ = better wine? I dont drink wine (omg wine is so :dead:) so a lot of times when a recipe calls for it I just grab a medium priced one and hope for the best.

Cheap wine does not mean bad wine. :nono:

Most stores nowadays post some numbers beside the wines they sale. Those numbers are the wine's rating. The higher the number (closest to 100) is the better. Start looking for around 80 points and any cheap price and you should be good to go when picking out a wine.

Now you a professional wine snob.
