Wireless Internet Help

I have a wireless router hooked up to my DSL modem for the PC.

I have a wireless card in my laptop.

Laptop finds the router with excellent connect.

Laptop cannot get to the internet.

Why?

I am sure I am missing some basic :duh: solution.

How did you set up the Wireless Router? Did you put in your userid/password info ( given to you by verizon when your DSL was installed)?

That sounds familiar. The PC works fine. PC is plugged into the router which is plugged into the modem.

When I set up my wireless I had to use a setup CD that came with the router on the laptop to get it to work.

Same here. I had to save a a file on the regular computer and put it on the laptop. This somehow made the system communicate. Wish I could explain it better.

Just because your laptop can "see" the router doesn't mean that it knows to use it. You have to set up your computer to use the router as it's gateway out to the internet. Depending on your router, you may also have to run a setup from it's setup to install on your laptop. This is where it will probably require a password and where you will select which encryption type to use (make sure you use something or everyone around you will have access to your network). Good luck.

I called Verizon. They helped me. :yay:
Lucky you!!
I was on the phone with Verizon for 43 minutes this morning. I can't send or receive e-mail.

They said it was because they were upgrading something, and by tomorrow, (6am) I can do e-mail. Lotta good that does for me today. :tantrum:

You need to set up some things on the router first. Hook up an ethernet cable from your router to your pc. Open up IE or Firefox. Type in the address field:
192.168.1.1
you will have to log into the router, it's usually
login: admin
password: password
I can't remember everything, but you will have to set it to PPPoE, enter the user name and password you created when signing up for verizon dsl. If you haven't already done that, you're supposed to use the CD they provided.

Got my son a laptop for Christmas. Wireless router is upstairs and he connects from his bedroom downstairs. I had no idea how to set it up. Called Verizon and they walked me through it.
