Wireless router

Today, my wireless router (a Cisco WRT5462) keeps dropping out. Re-booted everything several times. Lets see how long I'm here.

On another note, I have a perfectly good Linksys WRT54GS that I 4got the PW for. Isn't there a way to reset it?

The wireless or admin password? If you know the admin password, you can log on to it with a hardwire connection, then reset the WiFi password.

If you've never changed the admin password, you can find the default in your manual.

When all else fails, you can reset the router to factory by pressing in the recessed switch with a toothpick or something, then while holding it it, power up the router and continue to hold the button in for about 30 seconds. That should also be in the manual.

You may remember this one, I couldn't get it to reset so I bought the Cisco....

Got a Netgear for my grandsons laptop. It sucks me dry, slowed down my desktop almost to stop. Test still comes up in high 12's, but its slow as hell. In layman's terms please (my computer knowledge wouldn't fill a thimble) can someone tell me WHY?? Had I known I wouldn't have hooked it up for him. :(

:coffee:

First check to see what other programs you have running on your computer. It's possible that the Netgear configuration software (the CD that came with the router) installed something onto your PC.

I used to work for Geek Squad (say what you will about them...) and people would often come in with computers that were running slow. They'd say, "It used to be a lot faster!" Well, the computer itself wasn't running any slower, it's just that there were more and more things that were loaded into "startup" I.E. more programs running as soon as the computer boots. It's kind of like pushing the gas and the brake at the same time... you don't get as far...

So check to see what else might be running in the background! Press the "Windows" key and the letter "R" and then type "msconfig". Look at the "Startup" tab. See if there is anything in there that you don't want or need. And don't mess too much with the other tabs lol

You might also consider upgrading the RAM in your computer as that is often the primary cause of system slow-downs. As soon as all the RAM is used up the system starts to cache to the hard drive and that's when you hit molasses.

(Sorry if this post is a bit off the original topic!)

What do you do now since you're not at geek squad?

Nothing wrong with working there. Having a job and making a contribution is a good thing.

My main problem was just the high prices they charge. I recall a customer coming in with a 4 year old Dell computer that was infected and they wanted to do a data backup, an OS reinstall along with some software installs etc. All said and done they walked out with a bill for over $500 - work on the PC plus the hardware they bought for the backup. One of those, "Cheaper to get a new one" situations...

And I've done a variety of things since then, worked there until the end of 2009. Liked the folks I worked with (for the most part lol!) but had a hard time charging $120 for a RAM upgrade and install... Been a network admin since and now I'm doing SharePoint stuff.
