Here's a general FYI for all the less-than-handy people out there (like me): Drill bits larger than 1/2" have shanks reduced to 1/2", not 3/8". Thus, they don't fit your standard cheap drill with a chuck that only goes to 3/8".

I discovered this yesterday AFTER I had drilled a 1/4" pilot hole in my front door to install a peephole. Took out the 1/4" bit, and tried to put in the 9/16 bit required. No-go. Went to Lowes and discovered the above information when I tried to buy a replacement chuck with 1/2" capacity vs. buying a new drill (also a no-go).

Wound up buying a smaller peephole to save myself from buying a new drill. Would anybody like to buy an un-used 9/16" bit?

Are you an engineer? That would kind of explain things.

Coulda used a spade bit if drilling through wood. Not sure how clean the exit hole is though.

Yep, there's more than one way to skin a cat, or drill a hole through one.

9/16 should have been a few solutions to your problem.

With the pilot hole in place you could have used a spade bit and drilled partially through in one direction, and finished from the other direction.. makes for a smooth edged hole..

Yup. There are also drill bits with reduced shanks made to fit the smaller chuck size. I'll bet any hardware store has them. I have a set just for that reason.

"You see honey, I already had this hole drilled in the door, and I HAD to finish the job, I know how much you HATE me leaving things half done. Don't you like the COOL paint job on the new drill, it's sSOOOOO much cooler than the old drill??"

i was with him for this particular shopping trip and offered to look at new drills but bohman is feeling a little broke at the moment so HE chose the $5 peephole over the $45 drill.

'Fraid not. :lmao: I am surrounded by them, though, maybe it's rubbed off.

A spade bit would have been perfect if the door were wooden, but it's steel exterior and what appeared to be fiberglass interior.

The kicker is that I bought a special bit and another peephole, when the original peephole was given to me for free.

The woman (and child) were at the opposite end of the store checking out Christmas decorations. Like she said, I could have bought it but didn't want to spend the money on a drill that would likely be used once.

Believe me, terbear doesn't object to spending money on the house. She objects (mightily) to spending money on the boat. She can't forget that I'm shopping for news sails and halyards....
