Working on Sunday...

Luke 6:1 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?
3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?
10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
What does it mean to say Jesus was the Lord of the Sabbath?

What were those Pharisees and teachers of the law doing on the Sabbath?

Wasn't it their "job" to keep everyone in line?

So, they were working on the Sabbath?

Jesus was with His Father, God, when God inscribed the Ten Commandments for Moses to use. Jesus was with God when God took a break after creating the earth and everything that goes in the box with the earth when it gets shipped to its spot in the Universe.

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were in charge of making sure no one pissed God off. Back in the days before the Ten Commandments, horrible things happened to the Temple workers when God got pissed off. He rained fire on Sodom. He had the earth swallow up priests who were double dipping in the Sacrifices. God doesn't like to have His rules ignored and the Pharisees were there to make sure this cat Jesus didn't do anything that might cause God to rain down fire on them. They must have thought Jesus was a magician! Healing like Jesus did, had to come from Satan. No one else could just "heal" like that. If God wanted those people healed, they would be the ones doing the healing. They must have thought Jesus was a magician!

I've always wondered, why was Jesus so antagonistic toward them? They were only doing what they were taught. They had to keep the people in line and the fourth commandment was to "Remember the Sabbath" and keep it Holy. They really thought the best way to keep the Sabbath Holy was to take a day off, like God did. They were assigned the Commandments... and Jesus was working on the Sabbath. Those Disciples were gleaning wheat on the Sabbath. They were breaking the "law".

Yep, they were indeed working on the Sabbath. They were doing their job. They were "keeping it Holy". At least they were trying.

Dr. Luke says Jesus healed a shriveled hand. The man didn't ask to have his hand healed. Jesus didn't require anything before or after. Jesus didn't tell the man "now don't commit a crime with that hand" or "don't beat your mule with that hand" or "you must feed the poor with that hand". It looks like to me, Jesus healed that man's hand to flaunt His healing powers. Those ignorant Pharisees and teachers of the law were angry because Jesus refused to listen to them.

:coffee:

Jesus would have held a COVID, RSV, Flu clinic on Sunday [while others were in church passing the hat]. The Pharisees would have called Him a criminal if He did.

Merry Christmas!
