For real. Wasn't there someplace that finally took the signs down because they were getting vandalized so often? I'll have to Google that...

Yes the KKK is here, but never really made much headway in this area due to their anti-Catholic views. If I recall correctly, another chapter of the KKK tried this in Anne Arundel county a few years back. AA county just dropped the whole adopt-a-highway program rather than let the Klan join.

I'm gonna have to agree with you on this one. I worked at a restaurant in Solomons a few years back and the head cook was very involved in the KKK in this area. I heard him talking about it a bunch of times and saying that there were local "names" in the group that you wouldn't believe. He never named names, but he seemed very serious about it.

And of course, that road is going to look like the city dump.

According to the SHA the stretch of road only has to be cleaned up 4 times a year. Wonder what would happen if we learned when they were going to do trash pickup and went out to take their pictures. It might make for an interesting news article.

I doubt that. Maybe not in the open in their white hoods but you'd probably never know that they're members of the KKK unless they tell you.

The Adot-A-Highway program is nothing but a "LOOK AT ME" program. Look at how many bags of trash the jail birds come up with after cleaning a road with an adopted sign. The signs are one more thing cluttering our roads. Did Anne Arundel ever restart their program?

So what if Missouri put up the signs and the said something like "This stretch of highway has been dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr (Rosa Parks, whoever) and it's cleanliness is proudly maintained by the KKK." That would really put a twist in their tights.

I've seen lots of Klansmen, but it's nothing like you see on TV. I was headed northbound towards Orange Park Mall on Blanding Blvd down here in Jacksonville. The intersection of Wells Road and Blanding is a popular spot for fund raising for the fire departments and others, who walk up to cars waiting at the lights and ask for donations (like at RT 301 and RT 5 in Waldorf.)

Anyway. I'm sitting at the light, and a black kid comes along the cars asking for donations to the NAACP Voters Defense Fund (or something like that), so being the nice guy I am I tossed the change from my console into his bucket. As I moved up in line, to my total shock and surprise, I see about five Klansmen, in their robes and hoods, making their way down the southbound traffic asking for donations! I don't know what they were collecting for, but they were going car to car.

I was thinking I was about to be caught in a race riot, when I noticed that there were some 5-gallon water jugs off the road at the intersection, and their were Klansmen and guys from the NAACP drive getting water and talking like they were best friends. No theatening gestures, no shouts, just hanging out at the water cooler. As a Yankee I was completely amazed and couldn't even think to move my car until someone honked at me.

I guess if there had been media folks and TV cameras in attendence things would have been different, but even the newsies didn't seem to see this as anything unusual. No cops, no tv cameras, and no violence.

What if we let the Klan adopt the stretch of highway, but only let them clean it after it's been strewn with dirty underwear worn by blacks and Jews? And then when they're almost done with the cleanup, we tell them who wore the underwear. I imagine they would scream like babies--"Oh god, I'm contaminated with inferior-race germs!"
