Would you wait?

I heard a call on the scanner earlier about a child locked in a car. This got me so mad, because the police were there and instead of breaking into the car, they called the fire department, the fire department was having trouble finding them. The officer said the child was obviously in distress and still they waited. WHY? Break a window! The poor baby ended up being flown out. She was alive, but unresponsive. If it were me, the window would have been broken the second I realized the door was locked. Heck with waiting for police and fire/rescue. It was 92 here today. Unreal.

What would the fire dept do that the cops couldn't do?

Could they have broken a window without shattering glass all over the kid?

Yes..they would go to the opposite side of the car, and pop the window out. Or..if the kid was in the front, they would approach from the rear, and vice-versa.

:yay: I'm still curious why the cops would call the fire dept?

I doubt it will make the news, but I'd love to know their reasoning behind this.

I came out of school today, opened my car door, waited a few minutes before getting in and still when I got in the car I felt like I was going to die from the heat in there.

I seem to remember a recent story where a citizen punched out a window, don't remember if it was child or animal, and got in trouble for breaking/entering, or something very much like that. Wish I could remember the details....

And yes, you would think the cop could have broken in, but they obviously have a restriction.

That happened to me too, however the Owners got in to some big trouble themselves. I got a slap on the wrist...

When it comes to a Child's life, there are no restrictions. I carry a Window Punch from my Paramedic days

I dont know what the reasoning was for waiting for FD to respond. I'm sure the cops felt they were following proper precedure. I would've had no problem breaking a window to get the child out. Sometimes common sense has to step in and the law be dammned.

But if it was me, the cops wouldn't have even had a chance to get there, but now I'm thinking the owners of the vehicle may not have been around and a passer by saw the child in the vehicle and called the police. I really hope someone wasn't stupid enough to leave a baby in a car and walk away. But, then, I as the passerby would have said to the call taker, as I'm breaking the window, "I'm breaking the window". But where it happened, it sounded like it was at a residence.

The way I comprehended it was the child was locked in the car at a parking lot. If it was at a residence, I would think the parents/owner of the car had the keys unless the keys were locked in the car in which case if I was the parent, I would've broke the damn window myself. Who knows, people do such stupid things sometimes. It still amazes me that they have radio commercials on reminding you not to forget your baby in the back seat. UFB!!
As I've always said, some people shouldn't have pets much less kids. :cds:

Here we go again, just heard a call, police and fire on the way to an infant locked in a vehicle, it's not running, windows are all up, it's about 85 degrees right now and I can't imagine the temperature in the car. Don't get why people wait, break the window if you have to. They say the baby has been in the car for 15 minutes before they called.
