WWII Heroes finally getting the recognition they deserve

I went to school in the 1960s & 1970s. They must have redefined heroes in the last few decades. When I served in the 1980s & 1990s, it was referred to as doing your job.

The only Black, all-female unit to serve in Europe during World War II, known as the “Six Triple Eight,” was honored Tuesday with the Congressional Gold Medal, following a long-running campaign to recognize their efforts.

What's next? Bronze stars for sailors doing 90 days of mess cranking?

I'm sure it was no picnic being a female minority soldier during WWII. But calling mail sorters heroic, is sort of a slap in the face to genuine, I got shot at on a daily basis, heroes.

At what point do minorities get upset when the bar for their accomplishments is set so low it makes a mockery of the award? Recognize them for their achievements. But put that achievement in perspective with what others did during that time.

What was heroic was that they knocked-out a mail backlog in an amount of time the military brass didn't think was possible. And a unit of black women at that. And if the troops at the front aren't receiving mail from home, morale plummets.

Yeah, not a hill worth dying on.
