Xbox problem

Sooo..the brand spankin new xbox I bought for Christmas now has red lights lighting up on the power button...only three instead of the four that constitute the red ring of death ( though I think this was sup to be fixed right?) anyway...play and trade said it was a fan issue? The darn thing is brand new!...piece of junk. :(

Anyone know of any fixes for this? Play and trade usually keeps the thing for a couple weeks, charges some stupid amount of money, and doesn't even fix it.

Brand new? I heard the new ones don't even have red lights anymore. Is it the new, slim one? (Pic below) The new ones supposedly don't have the issues the old ones had.

As to the problem, it IS the Red Ring of Death, and no real fix to it. If it's brand new you should just take it back to the store and exchange it.

no it isn't the slim version, but I bought it on black friday and it wasn't opened until Christmas. it's not a full red ring like the one that bit it before..but I am pretty peeved the stupid thing was 200 bucks and is broken so quickly?

That sucks. That is very quick to get the RRoD. Even the newer "old" models were supposed to have been better. My old ones bricked every 18-24 months or so.

You could send it to Microsoft for repair, but it'll just brick on you again in a few months after you get it back. Take it back to the store and try get it exchanged. Not sure if you can get a new model for $200, though.

They're out to get us
did the place have any sort of short term warranty on it by chance? that's weird that it would break so quickly, i haven't heard of the red ring of death in awhile.

It was walmart :killingme. I didn't get their plan, I believe microsoft is sup to be able to fix it...but play and trade said it was a heating/fan issue because it wasn't all of the lights lit up..our other ones #### the bed...and I only consented to getting a new one because they were supposed to have these issues worked out. Im rather annoyed..I guess I could give microsoft a call, but I somhow doubt they will help me much.

I hate that stupid lump of overly expensive plastic. i didnt want to waste my money on another one because the three we had before all ended up failing for some reason or an0ther..one we kept getting fixed just for it to break again. I feel like calling microsoft and telling them they suck and that I want my money back so I can buy a ps3.

My son's 360 is two years old and seems to have held up well, considering what the others have said in this thread. But..last weekend it quit being able to 'see' a DVD in the drive. Is this a simple fix?..as in is the drive nothing but the same as any ole PC uses? I was going to assume so and dig in..but some of the stuff you folks just posted has me concerned that I might well be wasting my time.

Sorry to hijack..but it looked like there were some xbox gurus looking in..

Are you making sure you have the system properly ventilated? For example, we have to leave the door open to the new tv stand we got b/c it doesn't have any exterior holes & all the game systems overheat...
You could try to take it apart but try to go on the site and put in your serial number to see if it's still under warranty. If so, they'll send you a packing box & fix it for free...DON'T take it apart before you check this. It's like $75 to have them fix it if it's not still under warranty...hope that helps! Good luck

Probably need to clean it. I don't know if there's a cleaning kit specifically for Xbox, but our Wii did the same thing & they told us to clean it, haven't found a cleaning kit for it yet though, they said we couldn't use a regular DVD cleaner...

yeah yeah
It should still be under the manufacturers waranty from wherever you got it from. They should exchange it without issue because of the issues that are arising with the xbox's. If they dont take it back- contact microsoft directly, have your recipet ready- and be ready to talk to them. My husband had to actually do this- and contact microsoft. No questioned asked- given a new onel

That sucks. We are lucky. We have the old Halo version and play the hell out of it for over 3 years now and never a problem.

I don't want to imply you guys are mistreating your xbox 360, so I'll just go with incredibly bad luck. The red ring of death, which it sounds like you guys have, still exists because there's always the potential for the system to break...but the issues that caused it to happen all the time have been improved with newer versions. That being said, I know a bunch of people with the original xbox 360 and haven't had the problems.

It seems like it should be under warranty and you'll be able to ship it back to Microsoft for them to fix. Hopefully that'll resolve the problem. And if better venting, area cooling, or a better surface is needed then hopefully the suggestions in this thread help too.

Sometimes with cetain units, you need to reopen/close the disc tray a few times until it "catches" and correctly identifies the disc. The last of my "old" Xboxes did this. It didn't lead to the RRoD, but was a minor annoyance.

This is assuming the disc itself isn't scratched or dirty.

My first indications of an impending RRoD were a louder than usual fan noise, followed by sound and video anomolies, and finally games regularly freezing in the middle of gameplay, requiring a hard reboot.

Not long after, :dead:.

That's what is kinda weird. His other one that had the rrod acted funny beforehand..games screwed up etc/// this time it was working fine, he had it off for a few days, turned it on...aand bam..red lights  And I don't believe it to be a ventilation problem..as it is on a shelf..but an open one..and it hadn't been played for a few days. not to mention I am a miser and the house is usually pretty chilly..:killingme

That is odd. Never heard of an instant red ring before.

Not to be annoying by stating the obvious, but maybe check the cords and make sure they're all solidly connected. Also, check the light on the power supply brick when you turn the xbox on. It should be green when on, and yellowish when off. ( I think.) If it's red, the power supply's probably the culprit.

Also, you're not supposed to plug the power cord into an additional power strip/surge protector, it should be plugged directly into a plug. The power supply brick acts as it's own protection. I've heard using a power strip can cause not enough power getting to the XBox, causing problems.
