I agree with doing away with the history month, but not ban the subject. Why it can't just be streamlined into "American History" and be taught all year long I have no clue
:yeahthat: Isn't segregating Black History from American History racist?

Let me repost...The creation of Black History Month was not solely based upon race, but it was about contributions in general regardless of race. We all celebrate various holidays, but race is not mentioned as factor in debating whether it should be eliminated or not talked about. The majority of federal holidays are based around non Afro Americans.

I'm sorry, the title is "BLACK History month" how is that not about race? just because the timing was set to coincide with a white president does not mean that it's not about race. it was set to coincide with lincoln's birthday becauce of his contributions to freeing african american slaves, again, it's about race.

She gave her opinion, nothing wrong with that. or is free speech only OK when you agree with it? Why is it so important to single out one group and spotlight that groups achievements for one month? Why not Gay and Lesbian History Month? Why not make January First Amendment Supporters History Month, and March Second Amendment Supporters Month? When is Non-Native Born American History Month? What about People Who Think Asian-Pacific American History Month and Black American History Month and Every Other Segregated American Racial Group History Month Is a Crock Month? Now that is a month I wil pay attention to.

First of all this lady should have researched her opinions further into depth before posting comments/opinions that are totally onesided being her side. She needs to apply her so call knowledge to doing some real reading and educating herself to know why Black History Month originated instead of applying her time and energy to posting comments in newspapers leaving the impression to me that she is very ignorant.

Here's some history for her and facts. Black History Month was started by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (A Black Man) who choose the second week of February because it corresponded to the birthdays of Frederick Douglass (Another Black Man) and Abraham Lincoln (A White Man). Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time I checked Abraham Lincoln was a White man. You came off making your comments that I take offense to because you made it seem about race when in all reality it's not. In today's society and throughout the years the meaning of Black History Month may have been turned around to focus only on Blacks, but it's not all about race.

And your point is what? I think we all know that Douglass was black and Lincoln white. That doesn't explain the purpose behind Mr. Woodson's starting of BHM. I'm sure his reasons then are not how it has become today. Just keep it as American History for that is exactly what it is. BTW, Lincoln was very racist. He didn't believe in slavery but he did believe in segregation.

I don't think she sounds like a nut at all. Celebrating and learning about important historical people should not be about race, and BHM makes it that. I don't even so much have a problem with there being a date set aside to bring attention to a person or groups accomplishments, but I do think a whole month is a bit over kill.

It's the shortest month we could find...

Yes, I think it should probably just be part of US History, and honor those who made a positive difference, regardless of their color... this would end up including many blacks and many whites... but I don't have any heartache over the holiday's existance, not enough to make a stink about it.
