WELL the kiddos wanted a puppy...so after much back and forth between the consenting adults in the house (me N Rottncop) we decided to find a sweet, laid back Jack Russell pup since the little one would be carrying it with her everywhere. Was there such a thing?? -YEP - and we found him. Bred by an Amish Family, who had his mum, dad, older brothers/sisters....you name it. ALL have super temperaments. They had 2 puppies left....little 2 ear who was the only one in the litter with color on both ears, and also described as "lazy" because he was so laid back, and his sister who beat everyone one up, was lightening fast and very dominant and snappy...so yep, we chose little 2 ear, plunked down our 200 bucks, and who on Christmas eve, became 2 Eared Jack...better known as Jack.

After 2 solid days of travel with the family, into the Mall, Tractor Supply (where he got to pick out his own cool doggy bed, balls, and squeakers etc.), and any number of relatives homes....we decided he is THE most laid back little fellow we have ever met.....AND....we think.....deaf as a doornail  I really don't think he's playing the selective hearing *terrors* are noted for....because there isn't even a twitch of an ear when a sound is made, and he simply can't be awakened from slumber unless you touch him, the crate or his bed. If he's scratching at the door to come in, and has turned his back before i open the door, i have to wave for him to notice the door is open, and come inside.

Yep...backyard bred  and yep we got what we paid for...a wonderfully sweet little doggie with a major issue. SO...any suggestions? Will he be safe with us? Horses, chickens, other dogs... :shocking: We love his personality now, so returning him is not an option. but how to train a deaf doggie....well, we're at a loss.

great info thanks...

Appy, the PREFERRED color pattern in Jacks is mostly white with only color on the head. We called the lady we sold our other one too 13 years ago to see if she had pups from her lines (she had a beautiful pedigree & is registered) and she wasn't expecting pups any time soon - darnit! :frown:

I was told that Jacks with mostly white and less color on ears are usually deaf..sorry thats what I heard..

Mabie with the Rottie along he will be ok...you probably have all kinds of critters back your way looking for a free meal.
We do. :frown:
But i'm hoping he and Liyah will bond, and he will follow her around for the most part. She's afraid of Hawks.
He barks like crazy at moving things, his vision is obviously 20/20 for LONG distances too. and he gives the cats whats for too.
This page has some interesting stuff on it. http://www.deafdogs.org

Sad thing is i was looking forward to taking him along on horseback rides....i'm afraid to do that now though. :frown: he might not be able to get out of the way.

Get this: I had a friend who trained a deaf cat. This skitty would sit, stay, come, get off the table - all kinds of things - by hand signal. My stupid cats hear just fine (techinically) and they don't do a damn thing I say. Her cat is deaf and obeys like a champ.

What's up with that???

Just so you prepare the kid's for his probable untimely death... You could use this as a life lesson.

This is probably a stupid question but...can't you keep him inside unless supervised? It'd be a shame to give up a good-tempered Terror just because he's deaf.

Yeah, I just talked to the boy, and he's gonna talk to Jes...and discuss the options. I want it to be a family decision. I discussed the obvious danger to him is taking into account where we live ... in the middle of the deep woods with lots of foxes, and a huge Red Tail hawk family hunting all the time... I'd feel AWFUL if that hawk got him, but if we always have one of the Rotts with him, perhaps he'll be safe, but i have to see if he's going to be an adventurous little boy and run off alone or if he'll stay with the Rottie-mommy. I have an ex-pen for him but that's makes him basically a little easy to get at snack...confined where he can't get away :frown:

I don't get why this dog has to die an untimely death. It's not like he's sick or something. He just can't run loose, that's all.

The Amish bred him. He also has a retained testicle  and she did say she'd give us another one if that didn't drop...good GAWD the story just keeps getting better and better doesn't it :lmao:
