I thought you had to live a lifetime, before you earn a lifetime achievement award?

Other than the AP writer and Leo proclaiming it is a life-time achievement award, I don't see where this is such a great thing... A who the heck is the Santa Barbara International Film Festival??? This seems to be about as obscure as you can get, IMO.

Go to their website and take a look at the films they’re screening. I wouldn’t sit and watch any of these if they were free with all you could eat buffet…

Leo is a tool. How come no one wants to remember him as the punk kid from Growing Pains? Yeah he’s a great actor… I rank him right up there with Steve McQueen…. :otter: This chump couldn’t carry Steve’s jock.

"How come no one wants to remember him as the punk kid from Growing Pains?" That's the FIRST thing I thought of when I saw what the article was about.

What's everyone's problem with Leo? Sure he's a pretty boy, too young for a Lifetime Achievement Award, and definitely not my favorite person (due to his political views) and not even one of my top 5 favorite actors, but even I will admit he's shown impressive range.

In "Gilbert Grape", he gave an outstanding performance as a handicapped child, surprising me as it was a role that I would have never pegged him to be able to do.

I didn't care much for "Gangs of New York", but again, Leo's performance in that movie was quite possibly the only thing that made it watchable.

"Titanic", despite the backlash that it has had among men, was a 'titanic' success, and it was the duo of DiCaprio & Kate Winslet that brought to life what the significance of that ship actually was from a historical perspective. A "ship of dreams", to be sure.

And now, I am firmly in the corner of "The Aviator", which I think is definitely Oscar material. Leo's performance as the demented genius of Howard Hughes was nothing short of astounding. I give that movie :yay: :yay:. Granted, I'm an aero guy, so maybe I'm a little biased.

"The Man in the Iron Mask" is one of my favorites. I love historical films, and DiCaprio, while he didn't carry the show, didn't disappoint either.

Sure, he's had some stinkers; "The Beach" just sucked. "Catch Me if You Can" was barely passable. And as I said, "Gangs of New York" was ok at best.

And though I don't care for the guy, and I don't think he's earned "Lifetime Achievement" status yet, even I'm willing to admit the guy has talent.

Leo is a fine actor - very talented. Unfortunately you've all been punk'd. Awards like this are the product of promoters and agents, not any real organizational body. The people that made "The Aviator" want it to win Best Picture and they want Leo to take Best Actor. So they made up this bogus "award" specifically for him to get publicity and make the Oscar judges take notice.

Certainly you didn't think he got a "Lifetime Achievement Award" over actors like Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington or Tom Cruise? Not to mention older and more accomplished actors like Paul Newman.
