Alabama Senate election

As you all are probably very aware, tonight and the VA elections are just an appetizer. This country is moving left leaning and more progressive.

I’m looking forward to the future.
I don't think you could count the Alabama election as an indicator of anything. The only reason Moore lost is from the "November surprise". Its an aberration more than the normal.

As for "purple" Virginia, its been leaning more "blue" in recent years, so I don't think it is an indication of the country moving left. If you think Virginia electing a Democratic governor is an indication of the country moving to the left, then I would suggest Maryland electing a Republican governor is an indication of the country moving to the right. Of course that's also not a true indication.

If you want an indication of the country leaning one way or the other, you need to look at the state level governments (governor and legislatures) where Republicans hold 32 governorships and 26 of those, they hold both houses in their respective legislatures. When those numbers start moving towards the Democrats, then you could make the statement that the country is moving towards the left.

Thank you for your reply. You, always, know your stuff. I try to keep up, but it is hard when babysitting a 2 year old, every day. There is a joke in there, somewhere.

Your creepiness has nothing to do with politics... :smoochy:

And, where did that come from? Please explain my creepiness. Buzz off, Craig. I tried to get along with you since 2011, and now, am done with you; unless you were trying to be funny, or something. Let me know. Whatever the outcome, I will never forget your PM’s to me that always started with ‘I like you’.:killingme:

The VA legislator is what I was referring, they gained 15 seats and are within one of the majority.

It can’t be overestimated the frustration the working class is facing, they will support the populist candidate, and that is always someone who is not looking to give big business another break.

I’m saying that we cannot ignore the Bernie movement. I was not a Bernie person, but with no media coverage he drew in hundreds of thousands. There is a hunger in this country, Trump tapped and I think exploited it. We know what’s going on, I think more thank ever, things are being cut left and right, from raises, to retirement benefits, to health care, to infastructre, to education. Why? Are we in a huge recession? No, company profits have never been higher, I picked on Apple, but it’s Google, Facebook, Visa, Mastercard, Amazon, all of these companies have acess to billions in capital, with virtual no costs compared to who they took it from: IBM, Macy’s, JCPenny, Gap

Those companies employeed hundred of thousands, now all dying.

What I’m getting at is I was raised to think that as we are going forward in time that our standard of living will improve, but over the last 20 years there started to be a blame on us, the citizens. It’s not us, we need just as favorable laws, give us the same tax and bankruptcy laws as the corporations and we’ll have a better future.

First, the Bernie movement was a joke. He is a hypocrite socialist/Marxist, that owns several houses, needs to keep his hair combed, and his wife is under investigation for mishandling funds. Second, the hunger of millennial comes from getting to do whatever they want. As, far as Trump, he did not exploit it; whatever people want to think of him (I have/had my reservations), he truly loves America. And, you can thank the years of whoever was prez for the cuts to raises, benefits, healthcare, infrastructure, and education. You ask why? There is no recession right now; we are in a boom. It is funny you bring up Apple. If someone had bought their stock back in the day when no one would touch it, they would be very rich, today. IBM was a goner a long time ago, but Macy’s, JCPenny, don’t know about Gap are doing ok. The internet has been the undoing of the traditional stores. Have you read about the Amazon employees that are getting overworked, and Bezos is making gazillions? And, yes, the traditional stores that we all grew up with are dying. Thank you internet, which will, also, be responsible for killing the rest of the world. I am with you truby on all you have said. It is all very sad. Hang in there. My Marine hub says we will be ok. Push come to shove, and all.:patriot:

Where will the libs (Repubs/gov) go with this win that they undermined? Will they say that is great that someone was elected that didn’t have sexual harassment accusations, or will they still go on with their sexual harrassment accusations? I choose #2; so to speak. This is all very stinky, stinky, stinky, but I would assume y’all know that.

Wake up, America.

And, how many of these holier than thou pols that are calling out other pols could sustain accusations of the same kind? I am sure they are shaking in their boots. And, the whole slush fund taxpayer money thing to pay off squealers is disgusting. I love America, but hate our Government.

Our Founding Fathers have spun in their graves so long, that I am sure they have dug through to Antarctica. The state of the current ‘affairs’ (so to speak) in our country is chilling; to say the least. You get what you vote for. I am sure Jones is an angel. Not. He reminds me of the Cheshire Cat, or the cat that ate the canary. Hillary, Obama, Soros, and OFA won this one, and others, and more to come if Americans don’t wake up!

Go, 45! Drain the swamp! :patriot:

I don't really see it that way. The political temperature swings left and right within a fairly narrow range. The news media generally magnifies these swings to be larger and much more important than they are. Over the longer-term, on balance, we're generally a fairly centrist nation. Left of center to be sure, but centrist nonetheless. There likely will be a swing in the mid-terms in 2018 as a rejection of Trump and his policies. The media will make it out to be more than it is, but it's just part of the natural process.

yeah Bernie appealed to the 'give me free chit' crowd - the anti wall st populist with 3 houses

Look at Venezuela Socialism is not tenable - a lesson progressives need to learn

give us the same tax and bankruptcy laws as the corporations and we’ll have a better future.

Do you consider corporations people? If you do not, then you are asking for taxation without representation. If you do, then you are asking for a flat tax - all are burdened with the same rate of theft of income. I can get behind that - a flat tax on all people, regardless, so there is not a disincentive to earn more.

The republicans dodged a bullet tonight. Given the current public opinion on sexual anything, Moore would have been ground zero for everything negative.

So who will be the next person accused of sexual shenanigans?

The election has one bright spot.
Now Moore can live in peace. The accusers will disappear back into the holes they came out of.
We won't hear much of this any more because it was BS to start with.
They got their 15 minutes that they needed so badly.
Just another political dirty trick.

Interesting commentary...generally silly...as usual...

That Doug Jones won is astounding. Alabama is about as red as a state gets. This should have been like every other special election a Republican win. Roy Moore is about as damaged as a candidate can be. This doesn't seem possible but Roy Moore was more unqualified to be in the Senate than Donald Trump was to be President. Our incompetent President showed himself to be a complete ass as well with yesterday's Gillibrand tweet...did that motivate AL women to go to the polls yesterday???

Almost 2% write ins?? Astounding.

As usual Littlelady doesn't understand the implications of this vote. This lowers the Senate majority to 51-49. Our incompetent President has made so many enemies that he faces monumental difficulties getting his agenda passed. Even stalwart Republican ideals that go back to the Stone Age can't get thru...and they can't get thru for the simple fact that the President is an ass who thinks he is the king of a private corporation. McCain, Corker and Flake have no reason what so ever to vote with the President...Collins, Murkowski and Rand Paul all dislike our incompetent President. When it takes THIS much effort for the House and Senate both with Republican majorities to pass tax cuts for the wealthy, there are major problems. Bush 43 after the mess that was the 2000 election was able to reward his donors with tax and estate tax cuts.

Trump is (finally!) losing the support of Republicans...politicians know what that means.

So if you don't understand why this result was so astounding (Hijinx look up the difference between "astounding" and "outstanding" before you comment), then you really aren't paying attention.

The GOP lost no matter the outcome. If Moore won, he would be an albatross hung around the neck of every Republican seeking re-election. If Jones won, getting the agenda thru of an historically unpopular President would be that much more difficult.

As for what this means for the 2018 midterms, right now the Republican Party should be shaking. Trump backed two candidates...both lost (naturally this morning Trump in his toilet tweets is making this all about him...no Little Lady this man does not care about this country. He ONLY cares about "Trump"). The Rs got smoked in VA but this AL race should be more concerning. Even a POS candidate like Moore should have won in a state like AL.

But who knows...our incompetent President could have an epiphany...he could realize he needs to work WITH people to get things done...he could realize he is the President of the ENTIRE country and the ENTIRE population...and the Rs running the house and Senate could realize the same things. If the President started acted, speaking and behaving in a manner befitting the office he holds, 2018 could turn out differently than it looks now. But this President doesn't have the mental or emotional capabilities to make than transformation.

Oh and, true to form, while every major news station is reporting on the rather shocking results of the Alabama election, I turned on Turmp News...what are they talking about: Hillary Clinton related texts!!

the hyperbolyue is greatly annoying, I am not sure why this is being labeled such a "stunning loss'

seems kinda obvious to me .... once again the false accusations work to torpedo a political candidate

Trump made enemies by running AGAINST the establishment ...... that is what this is The UNI-PARTY Establishment vs the Outsider Anti-Establishment Guy

Hogan was elected because he's a centrist and people are becoming more and more frustrated with extremists from the left and the right.

Some people are. Many more are moving even farther to the right or left - especially left, in terms of sheer numbers - than I previously even thought possible.

But I agree..the extent of the polarization is maddening and the consequences pretty obvious.
