AMTRAK train derailment

according to news reports the train was doing 80 in a 30

Right. The train was not only exceeding the speed limit on that section of the track, it was exceeding the speed that standard passenger rail tracks are designed to handle.

Still not a “high speed train”.

No need. I know what marketing bluster is. They do too I’m sure.

It was a too high speed train.

Wow, if only there was some sort of government oversight we could use to prevent this sort of thing from happening. Oh wait, we don't need to government regulations, just ask congress who killed the rules for safer rail regulations 3 times, and the trump admin who stopped regulations from being placed on passenger rail 4 times this year.....

Did Trump stop any speed regulations?

I doubt he did.

Speed Control was installed on this stretch but it wasn’t ready for use. The wreck near Philly a while back had it but it wasn’t turned on. Trump has nothing to do with that. This is despite reports that it is in use system wide.

The PTC requirement was supposed to kick in in 2015 but was deferred to 2018 by the prior administration.

BNSF Seattle division already has PTC active on their own trains. It is Amtrak that is behind on equipment and staff training.

Fail.

I have read this thing over and there is only one instance of a mention of the Engineer.
Did he die in the collision, did he go to sleep at the controls?
Don't trains have dead man controls?
Why did this train hit the curve at 80 MPH if not the fault of the engineer.?
Why was he running at speeds higher than allowed in the first place?
Why don't we know his name? His record?
Surely an inaugural pass at this new track should have been in the control of a top man.
Too many unanswered questions. By now this man should have been interviewed if he is alive.

Alive. A bit scratched up.

Don't trains have dead man controls?

Yes, but the deadman switch doesn't know the speed limit of the track ahead. Positive train control (PTC) or automatic train control (ATC) is the system you are looking for. The trackside equipment for PTC was installed on that route but Amtrak was not ready to make use of it and it had not yet been integrated into the operation of the Cascades train.

Why did this train hit the curve at 80 MPH if not the fault of the engineer.?

That's why the NTSB is investigating the accident right now. It would be boring if we knew all the answers before the investigation.

Why don't we know his name? His record?

Both have been reported.
