I was not impressed w/ her at all and told Dr. Polko. I even went as far as to tell the staff to put a note on my file that I did not want to see her again.

I like both of them and polko. they tried to push me on shonekin the last time i made an apt and said no sorry don't want to see her i would rather see polko or anne or tia (i think that is her name). i saw tia the last time i was in and she was very helpful to me she took care of my issue i was having and got it under control now I feel like I can live life without being in pain :)

I didnt have a problem w/ Dr. Davis as much as Shonekin, but neither of them are as good as Polko or Anne.

I had walking pnuemoia when I was 8 months pregnant and my cough was so bad that I actually pulled a muscle in my stomach from the coughing. I was in excrusciating pain one night so I went to the L&D and Shonekin was on call... she was completely unsympathetic and rude. She didnt even come to the hospital to see me, she told the nurses to tell me to go home and take robitussin that there was nothing else she could do for me. I went home and was awake the entire night, went first thing to Dr. Polkos office that morning and told her what happened and how I was treated. She prescribed me a medication to help w/ the pain of the pulled muscle and a prescription strength cough medicine.

I have heard many bad things about shonekin. I won't see her ever. if she keeps this up she might not have any patients left. I agree with you polko or ann are the best. if i have a problem with one of the doctors polko will be first to hear about it as she is my obgyn I have used her for many years and like her alot.

Okay...thanks!

What are the issues with her, is it her bedside manner, is she rude, uncaring, not interested at all? That's what I'm getting from the responses.....

How do you feel about their nurse practitioners? They were offered to me as well......

I love both of the nurse practioners ann is very good and so is (tia) I think that is her name. they both take there time with you and listen to what you have to say they don't rush you out the door. The last time I was in there i was in there for 15min as I had a bunch of questions about the female issues i was having and we got me all straightened out and i have had no issues since.

I highly recommend Anne Naru (she's the only one I've seen). Anne is very thorough, knowledgeable, and has a great bedside manner. I'm sure you'll like her.

rude, uncaring, and extremely not interested. I had her for one of my appointments and she just nodded her head and said thats normal thats normal alright you need to come back in 4 weeks for your next appointment bye... Hello I had had 4 kids at that point so I think I know when something is normal and when it isnt with my body.

My advice is for you to ask to see Polko or Naru, if they are booked up and you can wait do so. Otherwise Davis is your best bet... however Davis is a male dr. so if you are comfortable w/ him doing certain appointments good I dont like to have a boy dr. for certain appointments

I have only talked to Tia over the phone and she was very nice and helpful.

Okay thanks. I had a personal referral to use Dr. Polko, but she's not taking new patients.

I'm going to call back and change my appointment till I can see one of the nurse practitioners.

Thanks again for your help!

I've heard all these doc names in the past and all the same issues with them. I am curious to know if anyone has had any experience with Dr. Stider in Calvert. He delivered my son and it was the best experience EVER. I really thought he could have been a woman in another life. Extremely caring and empathetic with every ache and pain I had.... Has anyone else ever seen him?

Went in for my annual and Polko got an emergency call over at the hospital so ended up with her and she totally hurt me and I bled for 2-3 days and let her know and she could've cared less.. Unpersonable.. Go with Polko, or the nurse practitioners.. Naru's good..

Too bad you can't see Polko. I have been going there for years and have never seen her in a bad mood. She is wonderful.

I do like Ann Naru but I did have her one time when she was not very nice but she has been fine since. I think she was just having a bad day.

I met Shonikan for the first time 2 weeks ago. It was a very quick appt. She asked if I had questions, I said no, she said see ya in 4 weeks.

I get to meet Dr. Davis in 2 weeks. I have heard good things about him.

I just hope when its time to deliver Dr. Polko is on call.

She delivered my daughter and well she had no bed side manners. She didnt talk to me like polko did when I had my son. She never checked on me and was hard to find when I hade to Push! However She was the one who set me up to be induced when I wanted to have my son. So shes 50/50 in my book. I prefer Polko.

Dr. Shonekan

I'm so glad this thread was started about Dr. Shonekan because I've been meaning to start my own. I moved to St. Mary's recently and was searching for a new doctor. There are numerous threads on here praising Dr. Polko and her staff so I ended up scheduling my annual exam there with Ann Naru.

Well, before the date of that exam, I found out I was pregnant. However, I was having unusual symptoms and it was determined that there were complications. They assigned me to Dr. Shonekan. They were checking my bloodwork often, which I am glad they were doing that. I was still having concerns so I asked to speak with Dr. Shonekan in person. She didn't have a care in the world about what was going on with me and she wasn't compassionate at all! She didn't seem to think it was necessary to help me understand what was going on with me.

The next business day, I received a call telling me that I had to come in for a procedure that day. No explanation was given as to exactly what they thought was going on or what the procedure even entailed. I had to ask and do research on my own because I wasn't given a sufficient answer.

I told them I wasn't doing that without a second ultrasound that day. That same afternoon they called again and said I had to come in for something completely different. They didn't give me other options, didn't explain what it is, why I needed it, or what was happening. Again I was off to research on my own.

If I had listened to them that morning, I would have went in for a procedure that wouldn't have even been relevant for what was going on with me. I never called them back.

Needless to say, I will NEVER be going back to Dr. Shonekan and I will NEVER recommend her to anyone. She didn't take the time to explain the reasons behind her recommendations.

I now HIGHLY recommend Dr. Hotchkiss' office in Waldorf. I saw Dr. Toni Mason-Jones (female). She understood my desire to have a second opinion and she took the time to sit down and explain everything to me. She helped me understand and cared about me. She showed the compassion I was looking for.

So, if you can't see Dr. Polko, don't go to that office because who knows what you'll get.

Although I have had an account here for a long time now.. I never felt compelled to post... Until now.

I know all of these Doctors. Enough said.

I see Dr. Strider in Calvert. He is a wonderful doctor. He does have a mild sense of humor, but it is comforting to see him being as human as you are. He will spend as long as he or you need during an appointment. My first appointment with him several years ago was at least an hour long, he is very interested. He would never belittle your experience or speak badly about you behind your back to his staff... He respects his patients privacy.... He does not mind explaining anything to you...He does not push people into c-sections, because it is convenient and profitable.....He will stop and chat with you in the hall, if he sees you. He is a real person, and truly cares about his patients. I would never again settle for anything less than this level of care from an OB-GYN.

There are reasons I see Dr. Strider over the other Doctors who are much closer to me.

Thread about Dr. Shonekan

Hello.
I found this forum about two weeks ago when my insurance company made an appointment for me for a new OB/GYN when I discovered I was pregnant. They scheduled me to see Dr. Shonekan. This forum had me wondering what I was walking into, but the way I do things, I try not to pre-judge on other peoples opinions. I knew I needed my own opinion and experience with her before I passed judgement. All I can say is..I am sorry that some of you had bad experiences with her. I feel that in all fairness to this doctor that opinions good and bad should be expressed. On that note...
I had a wonderful, wonderful experience with this doctor. When she entered the room, she was very cheerful, upbeat and ready to answer any questions I had. I am going to be a high risk pregnancy for many reasons, and she assured me that she would be very well qualified to treat me throughout the pregnancy, with the fact that I had other specialists that I am seeing as well, and she would work hand and hand with them. I had a scare while I was in her office today, when they had a hard time finding my baby and the heartbeat. It turned out I am just carrying the baby more in a forward position than most women, and early on, it was surprising my baby was so far forward. She reassured me, said a prayer with me (WHAT DOCTOR DOES THAT?) and she cried when she saw me crying and told me she would do all she could to help me. The baby was found through a second ultrasound in a different position. She did not give up until she knew what was going on and could give me a hard, real answer. How can that be a heartless, non caring doctor? My experience was great with her, and I look forward to seeing her again in two weeks. On another note, my husband was in the waiting area, and he knew I had been to this forum and had seen some negative posts. He was asking other patients of hers their opinion and it was the same thing over and over again, that they love her. I just wanted to put my experience in here, because I think its fair to her, and to other people that need a well informed forum to make their own decision. I am glad I followed my own morals and gave her a shot on my own, I was not disappointed one bit.

She is her own Dr. I was pregnant when she joined the staff. I had both Dr's deliever me in Jan of 08. Personally Dr. Polko has a way of making you feel like everything is alright with the world. that comes with experience.

The only way someone learns what you want is by telling them exactly what you need. Not expecting them to KNOW or feel what you feel. :thewave:
