I sure hope something stays in Callaway. Be a long ride to the next nearest grocery store if not.

except Food Lion and Giant are not even in the same class ... saying they sell groceries is about the only comparison

True. For the feds they are both 'grocery stores'.

Thank you. Why doesn't it matter when it's one grocery store but in several close locations?

The feds rarely intervene if a store chain grows and just happens to become dominant in a market. Breaking up that kind of monopoly is a more complex process involving litigation. If however two chains require approval for a merger and it affects a large area, it is an easier process for the feds to require concessions. Without their approval, the merger can't be completed, so the chains will do what it takes to find a compliant solution.

Gotcha! Just sucks if they do sell off the Food Lion in the Park.

The operations may be of different classes (in someone's assessment), but to a significant degree they serve the same relevant product markets (A). And for the stores in question they apparently serve the same relevant geographic areas (B). That (A+B) means they serve the same relevant markets, and that's what matters when it comes to anti-trust law.

To other discussions in the thread: Yeah, this isn't about store closures it's about required (or otherwise desired) divestitures. If the stores were going to be closed (as a result of the merger), that likely wouldn't resolve the FTC monopoly concerns which might force the sales to begin with.

Is it true Wegmans is going into the Food Lion location?

IMHO...Wegmans will never be in St. Marys Co, And a stretch for it to be anywhere in Southern Maryland...

If it were ever to happen it would probably be Hughesville, Waldorf, Price frederick..Some place central to all of Southern Maryland, Never California or Lexington Park.

The shear size of those stores and the volume of sales needed to sustain it is huge.

..Plus in St. Marys you cant sell liquor in a grocery store.

No additional grocery stores can sell alcohol. McKays was grandfathered in when the law changed (if I recall correctly). That's why the Wildewood store closed. They couldn't add liquor to it by transferring an existing license, so they shut it. That's why you have to go outside to get into the liquor store portion of the McKays in Leonardtown.

The license transfer was opposed by the already existing liquor store in the complex.

I used this example in the New Businesses thread. Giant/Food Lion are in the same situation as when Exxon and Mobil merged a few years ago. The combined company was forced to divest itself od some locations due to competition reasons.

I would think that where a Giant and Food Lion are fairly close together it would be a no-brainer for the company to close Food Lion. I don't know how some of them stay open with as little business as they get.
