THE OUTRAGE!!!!!!!!

In Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation. A black one shoves a hall monitor and gets 7 years in prison. The state NAACP calls it `a signal to black folks.'

The youth had no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. But Shaquanda was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced by Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville to prison for up to 7 years, until she turns 21.

Just three months earlier, Superville sentenced a 14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson for burning down her family's house, to probation.

"All Shaquanda did was grab somebody and she will be in jail for 5 or 6 years?" said Gary Bledsoe, an Austin attorney who is president of the state NAACP branch. "It's like they are sending a signal to black folks in Paris that you stay in your place in this community, in the shadows, intimidated."

:shocking: Wow. That does seem a little over the top. Maybe it's because her crime was a violent crime against another person? Of course, that's still a bit too much of punishment.

That story makes me sick. Seems like we are taking a big step backwards in regards to race.

You have to understand, when I say "Violent" I don't mean the dictionary term. According to schools now (because of the shootings, etc.), any situation where a child puts their hands on another person is considered an act of violence, even just pushing. It is consider the "Zero Tolerance" policy and is in the school handbooks. Also, my daughter went through this for hitting a boy on the arm who took something of hers and wouldn't give it back.

I didn't read the article, but is this the reccomendation from a jury?

I'm questioning whether race has to do with it, or if it's the judge and jury's interpertation of a law.

White or black, that sentence is too harsh.

I don't want to sound like I'm agreeing with the punishment but this wasn't another kid it was a 58 year old woman.

Racist? I don't know, I wonder what would have happened if a white girl pushed the hall monitor. As far as burning down the family house, it wasn't a random house.....I don't care what color you are, if you push an adult in any kind of violent way....

I don't have a problem with her going to juvy for it, but 7 years is harsh. I have a feeling this girl was just a typical common bully though.

PEOPLE PLEASE READ THE ARTICLE.

The girl was ALLOWED to go into the school early to get her meds from the nurse and the hall monitor pushed her and she pushed her back.

I dont care how old the lady was...she wasn't injured.

What I don't get is, if she had no prior history of this, why didn't they do the least punishment for the crime first - say suspended from school for 3 days - and then after another offense, the next punishment, etc. My middle school daughters school handbook very clearly spells out what punishments you will receive for infractions and for every infraction thereafter. This school has no pre-determined policy like that?

They better get that girl out of that juvenile center. She'll come out worse than she went in, if she comes out at all.

I would agree that, with the story as written, the punishment is a bit harsh. My question though, she has been in jail for 10 months now, and it is just now making it into the media? I would surmise there is more to this story then is currently written.

I agree. The media loves to paint law enforcement as racist and loves to paint a racial divide in America - Just like they did with the NYC Nightclub shooting.

If that's what happened, the hall monitor should've been fired.

I could see the girl getting suspended from school, but come on, its not like she pushed her down a flight of stairs. What's the problem with some of you people? A KID that pushed someone, anyone shouldn't be locked up. That crap shouldn't even be in court. A couple days detention and a good smack from her parents is all she deserves.

If she pushed someone down a flight of stairs or off a table or out of a window, then I could see a bit of juvy.

I read the article, the hall monitor may not have been aware the allowance. If this is the case, her job is to keep the kids out of the building before school starts. In any case the girl is not allowed to shove an official performing her duties.
