Prince George’s County teens, indicted Thursday in the stomping death of a 56-year-old immigrant man, filmed their victim dying as they taunted him and spat on him, prosecutors said.
Three of the four teens police say were involved in the killing Aboubacar Camara, of Hyattsville, were indicted on first-degree murder charges Thursday by a grand jury, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey said.
“It was a savage beating death,” Ivey said. “I thought [the indictment] was appropriate given the nature of the offense and some of the other surrounding circumstances.”
The fourth teen, Calaisha Vaughn, 14, is still under investigation, Ivey’s spokesman said. But police said in court documents she was first to initiate contact with Camara on May 28 by asking if he had a cigarette as he climbed the stairs leading from a playground to the back of Bladensburg Elementary School where the teens “laid in wait for him.”
Police say that when Camara said he didn’t smoke, Regina Young-Bey, 15, bumped him in the shoulder, knocking him to the ground. Once down, Young-Bey, Justin McBride, 15, and Marcus Williams, 14, began kicking Camara and continued even as he coughed up blood, court documents say.
As witnesses approached the bloodied victim, the teens took his shoe and a pack of Marlboro cigarettes while they snapped photos and took video with their cell phones, sources close to the investigation and court documents said.
They fled when police and an ambulance arrived, but not before taking the time to spit on Camara as they stood over him and witnesses ran to his aid.
Camara was taken to a local hospital, but died of his wounds two days later.
Even Ivey, a veteran law enforcement official, was surprised by the extreme violence, saying, “It’s a new one for me.”
Although Ivey declined to comment on any gang affiliation the teens may have, police officials have said they believe the teens are part of group called either the Skull Crushers or the Skull Krusher Crew. They also maybe responsible for other attacks in the Bladensburg area, and there may be photos of those as well, police said.
