Looks like the Russians stormed the school. Whether by choice remains unclear. Either way it was the right move. I think the civilized world needs to accept the fact that, once you are taken hostage, you are dead. That makes dealing with these terrorists that much easier. And they will stop if they see no upside. Negotiation, caving in to demands, being like Spain, are all losing propositions.

Russian special forces don't have the reputation for making clean rescues, but they kick butt when it is necessary. As far as brilliant rescue, it probably was as good as can be expected since the place is surrounded by mines & tripwires. Read that some of the hostage takers were beaten by the parents, some ran into a building that was then shelled by tanks. I would venture to say that hostilities in Chechnya will increase and not be pretty.
