Thanks dems. It looks like the horse-drawn carriage thing is happening tomorrow night. It really doesn't look like going to DC on Friday is worth it. I'm probably better off staying home and watching it on TV.

:yeahthat: The traffic is supposed to be horrible, not to mention you have tourists coming to get momentos of the occassion and stuff. I understand that Friday is a Fed. holiday but will it be a permanent holiday like other presidents day?

I seriously doubt it. Wouldn't that make him the only President with his very own holiday? I guess the reason Bush closed the government on Friday was because the funeral service is happening that day. I would have liked Wednesday so that I could participate in the public-type happenings.

It's up to each individual company as to how they want to handle it. If they give you the day off... it comes out of their pocket... not the governments.

I get the day off without having to use leave ............bwwwaaahahhaaaaaaa :neener:

Actually, that's not true. Officially, the federal holiday is for Washington's Birthday, Lincoln has nothing to do with it. Many states have or used to have Lincoln's Birthday as a state holiday, including Maryland but many states and local governments have gone to recognizing only the one date and calling it President's Day. Legally the Federal holiday is still Washington's Birthday.

 Since I still don't have an answer, let me try to get this out of someone. Are schools open or closed Friday? To me a Federal Holiday means everything shuts down except for retail.

So, apparently, it is still NOT an OFFICIAL Federal Holiday and the Feds get pd to stay home and we get pd to come to work. O, IC.

From my managers here on Pax.

"All,
Federal employees will be off on a federal holiday to observe the National Day of Mourning on Friday, June 11th. Some guidance is provided in the attachment below. It also addresses CWS and those on leave. Contractors should coordinate with their companies, their CORs and their technical pocs as to policy for their individual case. If companies choose not to observe the holiday, the base will be open. This would be handled like any other holiday the Federal Government observes that some companies don't (Columbus Day, etc).

This is truly a memorable moment in history - the last state funeral of this magnitude was over 30 years ago. Many of us have not seen such a thing in our lifetimes. Please pause with our nation to reflect on the passing of one of our Presidents and this shared national event."

Schools don't close on Federal holidays, they close on State Holidays and then it's at the discresion of the Bd of Ed in each jurisdiction. For example, schools are open on Veteran's day and Columbus Day. And some schools in other parts of Maryland are open on MLK day. Since Reagan was a federal official, not a state one, don't look for the State to declare a day off (unless maybe, if you live in California)
